I would say the Intrebid as it has better turn rates and forget about an escort as you can do subsystem targeting with out riuning your ship build.

I was wondering whether the advanced escort would be any good?

Tholian Orbie, excellent command and control. D'kyr if you don't want to splurge on keys. DSSV if you don't want to use an ounce of zen.

# 14 Best Ship For Sci RA
08-18-2013, 12:29 PM
Hello, The Long Range Sci Vessel Retrofit (Intrepid VA ship) is a good ship if you want a very sci oriented ship. The ship comes with two engi BOFF slots and two Sci BOFF slots with one tactical. it gets an extra sci console and the ablative hull armor makes it able to survive a long time. its a good help to your team too.

Sell the keys every month, you'll get one a lot quicker.

Wells class was only about 80m last time I looked - that's only about 50 keys. 10 months and you'll be there

Or just earn 80m some other way. Opening lockboxes should be for people that need Lobi, any other reason and you're burning money/zen/dilithium/ec.

Obvious option: Mirror Patrol Escort. Very powerful and very cheap, with a nice, simple, cheap build that can generate superb performance. Of course, there are plenty of other viable options, top choices are probably Vesta, Temporal Destroyer/Elachi Escort (they're practically the same ship), Multi-Vector/Fleet Advanced Escort, or Andorian Escort, but you could easily take a cruiser or eng heavy escort (like the Risian corvette) too. Unfortunately sci abilities are pretty weak, which makes sci ships the tough option for any captain, but with the right build and especially with a good ship you can pull it off. Ideally you'd want a Vesta, Wells is next best, others will be a struggle, but still doable. Throw some more criteria in and we can get more specific on what to choose, there are a lot of completely viable options, and few things that you absolutely need to avoid (I wouldn't get the D'Kyr, and the Intrepid Retro is probably obsolete with the Vesta, and Galaxy variants are weak, and there are probably a couple more, but not many).

I am just about to level up to RA in the game, and I was wondering what ship I should get.
Some may think this is madness, but...

Research Science Vessel Retrofit. All turret build.

I'd buy it off the exchange it would probably be much easier. Sell the keys your buying as capital.

It's good. It's also an Escort so super easy to gear.

Mk XI Rare (Blue) Deflector (Go Positron), Impulse and Shield should all be cheap enough or replay a couple of missions (Play Past Imperfect twice for Efficent Engines & Paratrinic Shield).

3 DHCs and your choice of a Dual beam Bank, Torpedo or 4th DHC forward. 3 Turrets Aft and your pretty much done. Make sure your weapons are all the same energy and start out with cheap Mk XI Green [Acc] weapons.

Warp Core that depends more on your BOFF Abilities and playstyle.

As a Sci I'd take either an Escort or Sci vessel and than get a Mirror Vessel to fill the other role. They are cheap enough Fed side. If you got the Free Nebula an Escort is definitely the way to go.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001.
If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why.
When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.

As a science captain, you should fly a science vessel for long enough to learn the ropes of your profession. Your good old R-A ship will do the trick during these days (or weeks). Try normal STF until you feel comfortable to carry your own weight in Elite STF, try a few fleet missions... There is no point in jumping on a zen or lobi ship before you can draw the most from your basic RA ship. If you want to try an escort, by all means find the cheapest RA escort (and that would be the mirror Patrol escort right now) and take the time to master the pure pew-pew style (of course there's a lot more to a good captain's gameplay, but learning the ropes is an important step).

So... you feel ready for making up your own mind about what you expect from your ship ? Then check these threads :
thread on science vessels ;
thread on escorts, including a discussion of why an escort (and which) can be a good ship for a science captain.

The point of these threads is to show you options. You don't need clear and definite advices because nobody plays exactly like you. You need to "know thyself" and only then to pick up the best ship for what you want. It can be a Vesta from the C-store, it can be a Tal Shiar Destroyer from the exchange, or so many other ships... Nobody knows now.

Have fun !
