In my personal experience yes gear is not as required as many seem to think thanks to how the math in STO works and how easy the STFs are.

Also those who tend to rage first tend to be the worst player of the group as far as setup goes. I just love people in CSE who freak out when a cube blows early because they are in a failboat setup that does nothing and don't even realize it.

Indeed. When I was starting out with stfs on most of my toons I ran mk viii gear and was still doing more dps than a lot of other players. Thankfully I now run mk xii setups

Tbh, in my experience the worst players are the ones who run rainbow boats. Not only do they do pitiful damage, but it seems that they are the ones who will go and pop a cube early without realising the consequences. Mind you it's not always rainbow boats that are the problematic ones. Sometimes you'll get the "tac in a cruiser" running all AP beams who'll be the perp.

Btw, what do you guys think is the worst class/ship combo?
There was a sig here, but I gave up. Thanks {REDACTED}

Yup, been runnin elites for months in white mk11 gear and a T4 ship without much problem. Rarely do I find PuG's that are outright stupid, most listen if you're nice and explain why things have to be done in a particular order. Those that CAN should help those that don't know whats going on, it helps everyone if you take the time to teach.

Decided to put on STF gear for the pre-season 7 crunch and I feel so dirty- STF's are alot easier if you know what to do and have the gear to make it happen, but they can be done with knowledge alone.

Exactly. This is why I could care less about how long someone has played ("veteran", sure), what sort of gear they have, etc. as opposed to how they play. Skilled players could still pull their weight in an STF with crappy gear. Besides, not every player has the advantage of being in a fleet, or a fleet with sufficient rank to have Elite Mk XII gear.

We don't need a WoW raid gear mentality in STF; we'd be better off without players who judge others by their gear (or assume lack of skill = lack of gear), and better of with players who measure other players by what they can do, how they play, what strategies they employ, etc.

I don't care how long you've been playing. I only care about how you play.
And remember to follow the rules.

Honestly I'm learning to cringe when I see Tac Chimeras. I don't know if its the ship itself that brings out arrogant, headstrong stubbornness, or if those are the kind of people who buy it in the first place. Not all of them are that way, or even a majority, but a disproportionately large amount of them, enough to set me on edge when it warps in next to me. Its like when the Oddy was brand new, only now with DHCs and TBRs.

Thats just the thing though, with a properly setup ship it doesn't even matter how the STFs are done aside from just shooting everything.

CSE: A single properly setup escort can kill 3 raptors before they get to kang. A pair of half decent any ship type can as well, or at-least keep Kang alive and healed. (Tac Team on Kang does wonders)
KASE: There really is no method that doesn't work other than ignoring probes.
ISE: This is the only one that can get annoying but a TBR goes a long way. Also a high DPS team can literately ignore the 10% rule and just pump out enough DPS to get et done.

So no, it doesn't or shouldn't matter if someone blows a cube or transformer early as long as half of the group are packing the proper amount of heat and/or tricks. Players have just become so accustomed to success when using the right tactics/kill order to compensate for the large number of bad builds that it gets twisted into the average player thinking they are required. You give me two ships with two copies of APB each and a single escort with CRF and they are all cake even if the other three ships are terribad builds.

And a final note about gear, the actual % difference between a ships DPS in white Mk X weapons and purple fleet weapons is not as high as we would like to believe.

Been seeing a new strategy in CSE last couple days- dunno if I simply got paired with a buncha rooks or missed a memo on a new way to do this mission but the team splits up and they take out all the nanites around all the cubes but leave the cubes, and after all the nanites are gone they regroup around cube, take it out then move to the next cube while trying to keep up with spam heading for the Kang.

Make NO sense to me, but I've been doing it differently for months with other PUG groups and almost always get the optional.

I've seen this way work ONCE, but the group had VERY powerful ships.

Actually seen that done at least once myself, quite recently - difference being that, in that instance, we had a player in a Vo'Quv with excellent DPS defending the Kang.

We therefore had a setup where three players were following the strategy that you describe, me tackling the spawns from the cube/nanites that the other players were focused on and the Vo'Quv, protecting the Kang, obliterated everything unfortunate enough to get within it's firing range

Make sense to me, the generators are not even guarded and the Raptor and Nevar only spawn when the 3rd one is down and only once, the real threat is actually the Cube.

Anyway I got the optional that way once, it does work as long you have a strong group ... not just guardian since what matters is the attack groups can be splint into two or not.
