# 1 Beam boat escort?
11-04-2012, 05:49 AM
Hi everyone! So I've been playing Sto for about a week, and I've been using this setup.
1 quantum torpedo, 2 DHC ( phaser ), and 2 phaser turrets in the back. I've been thinking about switching to a beam boat because the turrets i buy in the store cost a lot of dilithium.
Those are setups i plan on using.
All beam arrays ( phaser )
2 DHC fore, 1 quantum torpedo fore, 2 beam array back
2 beam banks fore, rest beam array
please give me your opinion about those setups, and please tell me the best one ( if you have a better one go ahead and tell me )
btw i'm a tac officer
thank you

Shipyards has a ton of builds. Probably a better place to ask than in general forum.

Escorts are a good match with dual heavy cannons as they have the turn rate to be able to keep the target within the narrow firing arc, beams are more suited to ships with low turn rates, due to the huge firing arc.

Although dual heavy cannons drain more energy according to the specs than beam arrays, in practice this is not the case and beams are less energy efficient - beam arrays are also much more expensive to buy on the exchange at endgame due to the popularity of cruisers.

If you want to experiment with beams on an escort, you could try using dual beam banks which are very cheap on the exchange - but unless you want to use tactical abilities that rely on beams (e.g. subsytem targetting, beam overload), dual heavy cannons are the best choice for inflicting lots of damage.

If you have some good quality turrets, don't bother changing them out until you hit level 50 - turrets are hellishly expensive and swapping them out everytime you get a new ship is not really necessary, the bulk of your damage is generated by your forward facing weapons.

As a general rule you don't really need dilithium weapons until you hit 50. Just buy white/green/blue stuff off the exchange or from the vendor for now. Once you hit 50, the only real use for a beam escort is in PVP against people that don't know how to adapt to the unrealistic movement restrictions (i.e. borked Z axis).

A beam boat escort will be decent enough for most PvE but if you intend to play STF's it will be weak as hell compared to 3 dual heavys up front and 2 turrets in back.

With a decently speced tac captain the weapons power is not really an issue with the 3 dual heavys and 2 turrets, ohh and never rainbow build ( mix weapon energy types) they are weaker compared to sticking with the one weapon energy type.

I see way too many rainbow escort beamboats in STF's and they are always much weaker compared to me .

HHMMMMMmmmmm, Pizza !!!!!

My Fed Tac is a Beam Escort, and I find that with the right configuration, she can dish out some serious DPS. And in PvP, a good Beam Boat Captain can be underestimated.

Thank you all for the help another question, if you were to fly a cruiser would u want all beam arrays, or beam banks up front and beam arrays in the back?

I'd go with arrays all around. That's how you broadside. You get enemies in the path of your forward and rear weapons at the same time.

One torpedo in the front or beam bank. Maybe one beam bank and one torpedo.

But at least two arrays in front and all arrays in back. (Again, one torpedo in back may be okay.)

Yeah i've got a sov set up as 6 beam arays and single for and aft torp while my Borteas is 4 aft arrays, 2 fore arrays, and 2 fore DBB's. Anything along those lines works well. Best DBB builds are sci builds TBH.
