So I've been playing some of the new content involving the Tholians and I've noticed something.
They use FAW on me and it shuts my subsystems down like a subsystem target. Is this a new feature allowing you to do this? Do the Tholians, in fact, use phased tetryon weapons without the proc protection?
I also notice that it appears as a debuff icon.
All I can say is that it is getting very annoying losing my weapons systems consistently from the Spiders using FAW.
Anyone else notice this and does it have a similar effect in other scenarios such as PvP?
Basically Cryptic put hundreds of thousands of Tholians in a small map and made them aggro-mad but it still wasn't "hard" enough to their minds (which, let me remind you, DO NOT play this game, ever, so they have no clue what is hard or not), so they just make all the AI cheat horrifically lately. This includes borg, it covers both ground and space. The AI is a freaking joke with built-in-hax to make it harder instead of "better" -- and adds more dissatisfaction to folks who (until recently) played this game.
The short answer: The devs don't play this game so they make changes with big impacts but don't care.
It only seems to affect my weapons systems for some reason and as they are firing Tetryon beams, (which as I understand it drain shield hp when they proc.) this doesn't make sense. Also when I'm hit it shows the targeting reticules that you see when you use subsystem targetting.
If they were phased tetryons they would affect all subsystems so I don't think it's a proc, more likely an "unintended" side effect. Also as I understood it, phased tetryons are supposed to give you the phaser proc immunity to prevent it happening continuously.
While it is not deadly, it makes my Steamrunner less than pointless if it can't make a shot.
If this is working as intended, it did just give my star cruiser a new lease of life and make beams slightly more viable.
I believe they do use Phased Tetryons (makes sense since those weapons came in the Tholian lockbox), but they also use Thermionic torpedoes, the electrical ball torpedo thing. Some ships use them in a high yield, or a spread form.
Either or both of these things are why they seem to knock your stuff offline.
It can't be the torpedo as it's only affected my weapon system. The torpedo is a drain, unless you are telling me they made it so powerful it can drain 125 weapon power on a consistent basis, this is not the cause. Also it has no effect on my engine power.
Again the proc would affect multiple subsystems if it was phased tetryon. (which it doesn't) This also doesn't explain the debuff icon that appears in the tray, which is different from and can stack with a subsystem target.
I'll say this once. Tholians use phased tetryon beam arrays. Each shot has a chance to proc the phaser and tetryon (one or the other or both). BFAW increases the rate of fire. More shots = more proc chances = higher chance of you getting your subsystems offline. Compound that with maybe 3 or 4 Tholian ships each shooting 3 or 4 phased tetryon beam arrays at you, then add in the BFAW, that's roughly 20 or 30 chances of the proc occurring per second (that's being conservative). Add on disruption and thermionic torpedoes, AND subsystem targeting (which if you read the description you'll see why BFAW works for it) and that's why you're losing subsystems left right and center. Your best bet: ET3. Removes all engi debuffs (whacked subsystems included) and heals you. The only catch there is that you then lose a cycle on tac team (also a must have for survival against the tholians), so you're all around boned.
But in all honesty, they're the Tholians. What did you expect?
And rodentmaster, please. The npcs are NOT OP, nor are they cheating, nor are they hacking. They're npcs. They are following programming which just got a little meaner to the players. But in all honesty, I approve. I am tired of fighting joke npcs, and these new NPCs (all of them got an AI update) are wonderful. I am on elite setting, and it's actually fun again! =)
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
