# 1 New Enterprise on the way!
12-01-2012, 11:57 AM
Since the other thread was taken over with politics, I'll announce it here.

The US Navy just announced that the next Gerald Ford class carrier will be called USS Enterprise. It'll be the third ship in the class after the, um Ford and the JFK.

So, that's right. The next Enterprise is a Ford.

Awesome news!!

FYI: the other thread about the current one retiring was removed. I closed it down because of political discussion but almost every post had to be edited, so I nuked it. Sorry political discussions are not appropriate for the STO boards.

Cheers,

Here, from the official US Navy website. SecNav apparently announced it today at CVN-65 USS Enterprise's decommissioning.

"Let's make sure history never forgets the name... Enterprise."

Considering how long yesterday's Enterprise lasted (really was yesterday), I wouldn't be surprised if I have kids of my own when this one is retired.

Will there be a "replica" on the C-Store once it get's comissioned?

Or will there be a revised version of the Enterprise history panels on the starbases?

Well, considering it probably won't hit the water until 2020, I think the devs have time to figure it out.

The CVN-65 herself was named for a carrier in WW2, which had the distinction of being the ONLY operational carrier in the Pacific Theater at one point, all the rest in dock being repaired or sunk. The brave actions of her crew inspired someone named Gene Rodenberry to name the spaceship in the TV show he was writing "Enterprise." Many important plot details over the years paid homage to the original WW2 carrier... How many times has our favorite ship and crew been the "only ship in range?"

I am mangling Captain Picard's quote here, but I am gratified that history will not soon forget the name Enterprise and that the legacy honoring the crew of the WW2 carrier will continue.
