Not quite. STO uses "Space Flecks" to convey movement as well, and there are many things that could be used to get your bearings other than nebulae and asteroid fields. Prominent stars and stuff in the background, and now that the Minimap is actually somewhat useful, I think this isn't needed as much anymore.

To a lay person, the only thing they've seen from REAL space, that looks anything like that are Nebulae, therefor: Colored Space=Nebulae.
Doesn't mean it's a good idea. Sure it might make a few maps more interesting, but when every map does it, it just looks silly. The Azure Nebula is supposed to be huge, impressive, and omnipresent and that can be seen throughout the sector, but when every system has a nebula in the background too, then it's kind of moot point.

Would simple starfields make it more boring and blank? Absolutely. That is positively what we want. It would give the areas that do have asteroids or nebulas a unique feel rather that a "seen it" reaction.

As I said, it's not realism, it's believability. I can't look up into the sky on earth and see a Nebula, so why should every corner of the universe have one? (Including earth? ) By no means does it need to be completely realistic. Star Trek never has been. But as science fiction, it needs some form of reality.

Then make new ones! Lot's of pretty star fields!

Now, we still don't have a ton of time, but we can do cooler stuff once in a while. You talk about how everything is always the same. I point to New Romulus, which has MASSIVE Auroras, that no one has mentioned. . . We have, and we will continue to add other cool space bits where we can, but we cannot retroactively do those everywhere in the game that already exists.
Those are supposed to be Auroras? Oh.....

Yeah that's a problem, they look more like the atmosphere is melting. And I have complained about that in the Tribble forums before. Could make those more like this? That would look much better.

I realize that the Denorios Belt is canon, and I realize that it is purple. But it is not that big nor that wispy. In fact it was quite dark. I would also suggest making the stars brighter Taco, they really do disappear on lower end machines.

That would be awesome sauce!

So inhumane superweapons, mass murder, and canon nonsense is okay, but speedos are too much for some people.

There is no nebula in the skyfile around Earth. . . . ?

No, the Denorios belt may not be 100% screen accurate, but I didn't have time to make a whole new one, and we had something that I felt did the job. It is nearly as faint as the image you posted.

Also, notice how faint the stars in that image are.

Here's a thought (as a "gift" to the community for Year 3 in February);

Can you update the "Sol System" map, to look more like... Our solar system does? When I look into the night sky, I don't see a bunch of colorful "nebulae". I realize you need something to show movement in space (since some people become easily disoriented). But in this day and age, one would assume there should be a better method than dropping "asteroid fields" everywhere. Granted, not around Earth in the "Sol System", but in alot of other maps.

Actually... What about the Milky way? It can be seen from the ground.... I'm sure it would be much brighter in space.

Its not.

Things are more visible from ground because we have a atmosphere, in space you dont really see much because there is not much of a medium for light to travel.

(Not to say the Milky Way is a galaxy and that is just a spiral arm)

I think what people are interpreting as "lots of colorful nebulae around Earth" is actually the Milky Way.

False.

Light is scattered by atmosphere... Especially blue light (the reason the sky is blue).

Light, unlike sound for instance, doesn't need a medium through which to travel. It does just fine in a vacuum.

Here's a letter from an astronaut describing some of the things he's seen in space:

The view is something close to what you might see on a very dark mountaintop on a very clear night. Only better.

It doesn't look that way on my computer.

the skybox in your "Earth" picture is boring. So I made one from a different angle: http://marhawkman.deviantart.com/#/d5r08ey

Mine does indeed resemble the Milky Way.

But this made me think of something. The Milky way isn't unique to Earth. What you see when you look at it is actually the Galactic Core. I would expect it to look somewhat different when seen from other viewpoints, but it makes sense for it to be visible in most solar systems.

For better or worse, we have several "Milky Way" skydomes. One of them looks much more like Center's shot. Either way, the skydome/texture used in Earth is called Milky Way, so I'm sure that was the intent.

Either way, those various Milky Ways are actually used in many maps. Not all, and often they probably get drown out by or interpreted as nebulae.
