The Lieutenant Commander level ships are labeled Cruiser, Escort, and Science Vessel. That can cause some confusion, as those designations are also used as a role rather than a specific ship type.

So why not rename those ships to something less generic? Maybe something like Medium Cruiser for the Connie/Excalibur/Vesper, Scout Escort for the Saber/Rapier/Ushaan, and Survey Science Vessel for the Nova/Aurora/Quasar.

I suppose that's OK, but the LtC ships are meant to exemplify the "typical" role duties of each given ship. Especially since there's only 1 of each class (not counting refits and the special ships). So the "cruiser" is the most basic of all cruisers. Calling them different things could confuse the user into thinking they've got the slight specialities that more advanced ships have (like the Patrol Escort's extra durability vs. the Advanced Escort's extra science).

For example, naming a Saber a "scout escort" implies that you'll be doing scouting, not fighting, and teach players the wrong kind of approach. Same with "survey" science, which also implies surveys, not fighting. And a "medium" cruiser implies that there's a heavy cruiser somewhere in Tier 2, which isn't true. At tier 2 (again barring refits) the basic cruiser is the heaviest ship there is.

When you fly a cruiser at LtC, you're flying a cruiser that does cruisery things, nothing more, nothing less. At which point you decide which ships your style fits best.

I guess that's a fair point. Though those were just examples.
