AoE shouldn't be stronger against a single target than single target skills.

If you're seeing it from other people, there's more likely more going on than just the one skill.

For example, when fighting a single probe, I'm probably not going to blow a lot of abilities on it. Just Rapid Fire, and maybe a high yield torpedo maybe. But when I'm faced with an AoE group, I'm much more likely to use Attack Pattern Alpha, and other general damage boosting skills at the same time.

I got the extra 2 boff slots from the c-store so I can, in Khitomer Vortex for example, use CSV and TS to kill probes/spheres/generators and then, at the end, switch my boffs so I use CRF and torpedo high yeld on Donatra's ship. The pause between the normal fight and the boss fight on STFs/Fleet Defense allow u to change quickly ur bridge officers.
This is very good advice. I have at least four TAC BOffs with all my captains for this very reason. Although the latest 'idiot-proofing' patch for the powers tray makes doing this a pain, it's still worth doing.

Heck, someone could have applied APB or MMT on the mob you're shooting at too.

But why is it that it seems as though AoE type attacks (1 v many), such as Cannon Scatter Volley and Torpedo Spread, seem to drop targets in an 1/8th of the time that Direct type attacks (1 v 1), such as Cannon Rapid Fire and Torpedo High Yield, do? Wouldn't you think it'd be the other way around? Concentrating your fire power into 1 target instead of distributing it amongst many??
If you play pve, than you do not neeed purple mkXII gears... even if you play elite stf. blue mk XI gears are enough. Only if you play pvp having purple mk XII gears can be important.

However most of the dps of an escort depend on your skill, BOFF's abilities, DOFFs and timing.

about AoE attacks vs direct type attack, using CSV an TS you can deal a lot of damage more but also generate a lot of threat. In same scenario threat generation is not a problem (think about probes in KSE) but it can be dangerous for example in ISE. Moreover AoE attacks are not very good when you are firing at one target only.
Frankly I use only CRF an THY, so I can destroy a single target faster (think about spheres and cubes) and I do not generate so much threat and so I do not need much support from healers...

AoE in conjunction with a Gravity Well will lead to ships exploding and doing damage to one another, therefore increasing effective single-target dps against a large enemy and his escorts. The other possibility, of course, is that people are simply using their ship and build more effectively than you are, and would be doing more damage regardless.

Those two lines answer my question right there.
