That last is no longer viable, they nerfed shield drains again in the past month, on top of the earlier nerfs, and the fact that it was barely viable before that, say in May.

It has nothing to do with it being "precious" to escorts. Escorts are just the best at making the most effective use of them because of the high turn rates.

Dual Cannons have the worst firing arc of the game, Unless your front section is pointed straight at an enemy, they are useless. DPS is only effective if you can actually fire the weapon.

Science Vessels are much better suited to Weapons that have larger firing arcs and using your debuff abilities to make the most effect on it.

If you MUST have something higher then a Beam array, Stick with the Dual Beam bank which doesn't necessitate having to be exactly facing your enemy.

I for one support this idea.

It's not really because it would make me fly this ship, or that I'm a fan of the design. I just honestly think that Fleet Retrofits of ships other than Tier 5 variants (i.e. Tier 2-4 retrofits) are lackluster and need something that would make them competitive against the rest of the fleet ships.

As it is now, most of these retrofits' stats are worse than tier 5 retrofits. One way of fixing this would be to give those ships some unique benefit. A passive bonus to diversify them from others. If I'm not mistaken the Fleet Research SV (Olympic) has a built-in crew recovery bonus. Not much, but always something. Other lacking retrofits could use something similar, and the ability to mount dual cannons on the Nova is just one idea, and it would make this ship kind of interesting I think.

I would leave it at "the best", because currently they have no drawback.

Dear player, what you think its harder ? to aim your somewhat narrow front arc to the enemy with your superior turn rate, or to make a perfect broadside with its even narrower arc with your own poor turn rate, against ships with superior turn rate.

Says who ? I think some science ships (those tactical oriented) have no trouble with firing arcs. Don't forget a lot of science abilites need to use forward firing arc. Are you saying, science ships are not suited to use their own bridge officer abilities ? granted none has 45 degrees, but being at 90 means you cannot effectively broadside.

well finally at least some argument that is valid and is not full of repeated demagogy or poor judgement. That escorts can use "dual cannons" because they are special, is the perk of old days, when in the beta STO was actually somewhat balanced between ships and classes. Not the tactical escort fest we see today.

I see nothing game breaking if science ships, hell or even cruisers had access to dual cannon (not heavy). Simply, because 90% of them are unable to effectively use them because of their turn rate.

Hint Hint: People are asking for dual cannons/heavy cannons for a simple reason - because they are best. Cryptic should just introduce some heavy beam arrays for large ships and be done with, so even people who like beams can do some heavy punching.

I run the Steamrunner Class and use Dual Beam Banks instead of cannons. It work.

Just like Single Cannons on the Fleet Nova Class. Its about your build.

But I wouldn't hold your breath on having DC or DHC being available on the Nova Class... I'm still waiting for a non-gimped Federation Galaxy Class Dreadnought. And that seems to be an even harder sell to Cryptic.

STO is also considered apocrypha, so there's that. In any case, no Rhode Island/Nova that appeared in an actual licensed, commercial Star Trek product carried cannons (or ones in the same sense as implemented in STO). All this is based on a single rejected Defiant concept that never saw the light of day. It doesn't even count as the softest canon, and is barely more legitimate than fan fiction.

Even a ship from previous Star Trek games (SC, Armada etc.), which are all off-limits due to licensing, would be more "canon" than a cannon-boat "Nova" used as justification here.

Hell, even a Player Character from The Old Republic would have more authoritative canonical support (in Star Wars) than this.
