Either way, those various Milky Ways are actually used in many maps. Not all, and often they probably get drown out by or interpreted as nebulae.
That explains so much.... I was wondering why there were so many BGs in foundry that were that shape..

probably the reason all of this stuff is floating around out there is to give you the sense your actually moving. When your just in black space (and there is some of that in the game, mostly on explores though) and your going full throttle it feels/looks like your just spinning your wheels (so to speak). Objects in space give you a perspective on how fast your going as they zoom past your ship.

Sure its a bit unrealistic, but so is Star Trek as a whole.
