I actually fly a Recluse like that with tricobalt mines. Rush into range, firing everything else, then hit a dispersal pattern, drop the mines and get out. Loads of fun it CSE to see BoPs pop from a run like that.
This sort of thing annoys me, I'd like to play a dodge-scort but I can't (Except for runs along the top of gates) because it loses DPS. Which leaves me to yoyo against al my targets which is really boring, even moreso when you have all your essential skills on the spacebar...
I really just don't know what to say. Ok I do, I'm just going to assume that you'll ignore it sooooo....
Hey go get em tiger!
Cheers and happy flying!
If I don't respond to posts on this forum don't be offended. I don't sub or follow any of them.
I prefer the hit and run, granted it's boring but it keeps you alive for longer. I find it easier to streak in with an alpha strike, speed away and keep repeating, hence why i've got attack patterns alpha and omega constantly on cooldown
So this is a legit way of flying escorts? Not being snarky, I'm asking as a little nublet. It seems like there must be a saner way of flying'em rather than the crawl forwards/backwards, especially when working one's way up to doing ESTFs eventually, but I haven't figured it out yet. And then I take it it's different again for PvP, but that's for a different forum.
Lately, I've been experimenting with a "Balance of Terror" sort of Defiant build. Decloak inside 5km, drop facing shields with Cannon Rapid Fire and Beam Overload, then hit them point blank with a High Yield III from my Omega Torpedo launcher, hitting Dispersal Pattern Beta and dropping Tricobalt mines as I pass. The timing is a little tricky, and you have to get lucky with a crit or two, but if everything goes right you can kill most anything but an elite Cube/B'Ger/Donatra/Assimilated Negh'var in one pass. If not, buy time with Evasive Maneuvers + Emergency Power to Engines/Deuterium Surplus until you can cloak again, rinse and repeat.
Yes, you get splash plasma fire from the Omega torpedo at that range, but a lot of times that triggers the Reactive Deflection from the 3-piece Borg weapon set.
You get maximum DPS by keeping the target within 2km, and within your cone of fire. If you're father you deal reduced damage, if they're not in your firing arc it reduces your damage. If you're not dealing damage you're not really contributing because you can't do much else.
So long as you can survive and are able to withdraw if you get smacked down, this is how you contribute the most in an STF. I've even known a pilot to hit Ramming Speed and Abandon Ship when he was about to blow up, but I think that's silly.
There's alternatives like the previously mentioned drive by bombings with tricobalts, but in general that's what you do.
