Hello,
I've heard a lot of negative comments about the playabe Aquarius destroyer. However, I'me getting very close to 200,000 fleet credits on one of my characters, and quite frankly, I can't think of anything else I want to do with all those fleet credits. So my question is:

What is it about the aquarius that people hate? Now I know it doesn't have all universal Boff slots, but from what I can tell, all Klingon Bird-of-Preys have 4 fore weapons and 2 aft weapons, same as the Aquarius. And Bird of Preys are VERY populaer. So it seems like a Fed should be able to at least get SOME use out of this ship. Why EXACTLY do people hate it so much?
Thanks!

It doesn't have the universals and cloak obviously, but it also lacks a BoP's superior turn rate, plus it has a shield modifier only slightly better than a shuttle. This ship gets nothing in exchange for what it gives up, roughly matching up to the Captain-level Defiant, despite a huge price tag and needing a T4 shipyard. Its just way too expensive and simply inferior to even the free T5 ships, and the only reason to fly one is for stylistic reasons. Mechanically, its simply a bad ship.

Compared to the other escorts it has less weapons and a lot less hull and shield strength as well as less consoles and BOFF slots. It also lacks the battle cloak of the BOP, which helps significantly with survivability and damage when used correctly.

Really you should decide what kind of ship you like and stick with that. For all situations that you'd use an Aquarius in a defiant is almost certainly better.

According to the STO Wiki, anyway, the regular Aquarius does have the universal Boff stations.

Still... aside from its universal stations, Reginamala is spot-on. The Aquarius is nothing except a neutered Defiant.

In fact, a lot of ships added to the Fleet shipyards, up to and including Fleet variants of lower-level ships, are less effective versions of something else. It's rather disappointing that, for instance, the Fleet Escort Retrofit (the Saber-class and its variants) have things like a 0.77 shield modifier when the standard at the Fleet level for escorts is 0.9 - 0.99.

I was hoping to see a lot more variety in Federation starships doing STFs after the Fleet system came out, but all I ever see are Alien ships, Odysseys, Vestas, and the same escorts we've always had.

Yeah, its kinda sad looking at the stats given to some of the ships. The Aquarius needs a buff or dropped down to a tier 1 shipyard at a reduced price. Can you even fly that thing as a shuttle?

Anywho, reasons to buy it:

-To stand out from the crowd
-Know that its a rare ship to be flown
-Its looks
-Arguably for its boff slots.

The ship, both the regular and fleet versions, will get a shield hp increase next week. Check out Tribble for the new stat.

It's ship for masochists. You intentionally gimp yourself and pay for it to Cryptic in return.

Patch notes, in case anyone was curious.

And before anyone goes hunting for it like I did, no, they did not give Fleet Tactical Escort Retrofits the lacking 10% boost to its shield modifier that every other Fleet ship has.

For reference, most of the 200k fleet credit ships are junk. I highly recommend getting your hands on some fleet modules instead.

By "the universal Boff stations" I assume reginamala meant the fully-universal setup that the Birds of Prey have, rather than a wimpy Lt+En universal that everyone's just going to use like an existing, tougher escort anyway (Patrol, Advanced, and Blockade Runner Escorts are the most likely setups I see, and all are tougher without losing much mobility). The advantage of a Bird of Prey is its flexibility combined with its ability to mitigate its fragility by using its Battle Cloak to escape a tough situation (using it to get away when your shields are already down) or to create a lethal alpha strike (by decloaking when your enemy's buffs run down).

The real kicker for the Fleet version is that there's no way to get the discount (though I think that owning the Tac Ody should do so for the Aquarius and the War Bortasqu' should do so for the Hoh'SuS... which is, by the way, in every way a superior ship), and yet the Fleet Aquarius does little to mitigate its problems compared to both BoPs and Escorts.
