Been playing about a month and getting hang of some stuff .. other things elude me.

1) Is six the most number of Boffs you can have active (left side)? and you have limit of others waiting in the wings (right side)?

2) playing engineer on cruiser was thinking my science officer can unleash photonic shockwave .. wrong .. her console station only allows first two abilities. So it seems I can never access that tier three she has unless I take differnt type of ship. Any ship allow more then one Boff to get access to tier four abilities?

3) If you have a limit on the space abilities due to consoles/stations, is the main purpose then to train up officers to get better ground abilities? if so any decent ground combat guide for Boff abilities? Traits to look for?

4) I have gotten attach to my andorian and other original Boffs but have three purples waiting on the rights side of screen. Do you find the very rare boffs worth so much more then commons or uncommons?

Thanks .. Celtic Fist

Answers:

1) Yes, the limit is 6 unless you buy more slots. Yes, there is a limit to the number of candidates you can have.

2) There is no ship with more than one Cmdr level BOff slot. And there is only one ship in which that slot is not set (recluse carrier with it's universal Cmdr slot XD).

3) The main purpose of training officers is to give your officers abilities you yourself cannot train. Ex. Aux2SIF3, RSP3, APD3 and most level 3 abilities depending on career.

4) Very rare BOffs have 2 superior traits (except Gorn, who only have one), unlike commons and uncommons which only have 1 if any at all. Those superior traits are better by about 50% than the normal traits, and are usually only applicable on ground combat. If you intend to mainly go space combat, then race matters more than quality. If you intend to have powerful ground as well, then quality and those traits matter.

Ex. Human X Officer Candidate (white): Leadership, Teamwork, Basic Resilient, Soldier. Overall a decent officer.

However, the same officer as a purple would have these traits: Leadership, Teamwork, Superior Resilient, Superior Soldier.

If you had those two fight it out, with same weapons, same armor, same shields, 5m away from each other, the purple would win. Easily, because of the superior traits. (ironically enough, I have a human tac BOff like that purple one I listed. Hot damn it's strong)
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.

You can have more than six. As you get promoted you will unlock more slots. You can also buy more at the C-Store. I have enough to have a bridge crew and a separate away team.

The number of bridge officer abilities is based on the type and rank of the ship. Cruisers typically have more engineering slots, escorts have more tactical slots, etc. Plus the higher rank ship you have the more slots you will have. A Vice Admiral ship will have four slots for the ship type, ie an escort will have 4 tactical console slots.

It sounds a little confusing at first, but this chart lays it out.

IMHO it doesn't matter if BOFFs are very rare or common. If you have a bridge officer you want to keep, and you get a purple doff with a skill you like, use the candidate to train your existing boff.

Yeah, rarity doesn't make any difference in space. Only two boff traits are used in space and those don't scale by rarity.

Purples are good to have on ground though.

1. As you level up you'll get more. Definitely 8, maybe 10 even as a F2P player once you hit VA. You can have I think 12 waiting "in the wings" on the right side as well.

2. As mentioned above, no ship has more than 1 Commander (4 slot) ability, and it "almost always" is of the same profession as the ship type (escorts have Cmdr. Tactical, Science ships = Cmdr Science, Cruisers = Cmdr Engineering). Only the Recluse Carrier has a universal Commander slot, and for the new Chel Bret it's an Engineering officer...

3. Training officers = better (harder to get) powers, and there are many available for tier 3 as well - certain ships will have Lt. Cmdr 3-slot powers, for example the MVAE has a Lt Cmdr Science allowing it to have Gravity Well I (only "escort" that can do this AFAIK). Promoting officers (unlocking more slots) is definitely a benefit for ground actions (you're best served by having an away team of 4 Commanders) even though you're shipboard staff may be limited by the station.

4. As mentioned above, rarity = trait strength. Since only leadership (currently bugged but on the way to being fixed) and efficient (not affected by rarity, there is no superior efficient) are the only functioning space traits, then a white has no functional difference in space than a purple. However, purples are better for ground actions (+5%, maybe even +10% to kit abilities for example) and purples tend to have better high-end skills and a higher chance to have the BOff-exclusive skills (such as Beam Overload III) than a white...
Well, with the upgrade announcement leaving NX and Connie fans in the dust again, can we restart / revisit the T5 Connie and NX threads - since they will no longer be "truly" endgame ships... (after we get the T5 versions, it'll be time to see them added to the T5U upgrade charts too...

Nope, F2P only gets those first six for free.

However, the inventory/roster boosts do not go away after you cancel a subscription, so rather than blowing a lot of Zen to mimic the inventory sizes of a Gold subscriber (double that of a F2P character at VA!), just drop $15 on a 1-month subscription.

Cmdr Tactical. Not Engineering.

# 8 Help!

Hi guys!

I'm relatively new to the game. Been playing about a month. And I have a question. I'm a Science officer, and I want to train my Engineer Boff to learn the reverse polarity lvl 3 skill. However, it seems I am unable to do so unless I am an Engineer myself.. is there a remedy for this?

Thank you for any replies!!!!! Cheers =)

I know it works that way if you're levelling up on a subscription, but does it also work for characters already at max level? I'm currently at 8 lvl 50 characters; if I'd get one months' worth of subscription, would I still get the expanded ship/boff slots on those, for keeps (probably excluding those for whom I already got some expansions)?

Don't

No, really, the additional bonus from Reverse Shield Polarity 3 over the other ones is negligible. You'd probably be better off running something (/anything) else in that slot. I stick to RSP1, if I use it, and run Aux to Structural Integrity in the higher slots. Or Eject Warp Plasma.

If, however, you're set on getting it, you need to get another player, an engineer in this case, to train it for you. You'll need to trade it to him, ingame, and then trade it back once he's trained it. Generally, you'll be able to find players willing to do this in any large hub.
