It gets a little confusing since T5 is really two tiers smashed into one, but the above is how it's always been explained to me.
*slaps forehead*

You're absolutely right.

Somehow linked ship tiers with different blocks of 10 levels, tossing the 2,5k c-store stuff at tier 5 and counting back from there.

Move along, people, nothing to see here.

Yikes, I didn't intend to spawn any confusion. I always considered the tiers to be like twam said. But well, since the "tier" classification stops at the free Lv40 ships and there are better C-Store versions and then fleet ships and lockbox ships even after that, I think we can all agree that it's an outdated method of classification.

Maybe it would be better to adress the ships with the required rank to fly them?

yes, as cryptic does nowadays themselves. Everything above (10 console versions) is mostly called retrofit or fleet-blabla

Hmm...thanks for all the input. I'm glad I didn't put down the money to buy the Long Range Science Vessel when I got Captain, as I'd planned. If I can't really use it for endgame, it's not worth it. I kindof hate how my lower level ships are basically useless now--I'll consider them retired.

Anyway, I wasn't aware that the mirror universe ships were available on the exchange--I might go that route to end up with one of each for the endgame. Best of all worlds.

If the Ambassador is bound to me, I'll keep it and toy with builds until I come up with something I like. I loved playing my Research Science Vessel, but beyond that and the Tactical Escort (which I'm not too fond of) I've played cruisers the whole way.

As for skill planning, I'll have to take a look at that when I can get in game (Gateway isn't working so well for me). I'm a science officer, and to be honest I haven't put too much thought into skills--so many skill points are being thrown around I've just been plugging them in where they make sense. Generally, I like to hit hard and survive--hence cruisers--but I enjoy decent mobility (hence science ships--escorts are a bit too fast for my liking). I also like concentrating on the science and engineering boff options.

I'll also have to look into the fleet ships--getting a fleet Long Range Science Vessel (I just love the look of the ship) would save me throwing down the cash for it.

...and here's a dumb question: are the mirror versions of the deep space and reconnaissance science vessels supposed to be reversed in appearance? That is, the Deep Space (normal) looks like the recon (mirror) and vice versa. All the stats except for turn rate and inertia are the same between the two.
I guess it makes sense given the "mirror universe logic..." or something...

I'm just gonna put it out there: The Mirror Universe Deep Space Science Vessel (which looks and acts the same as the Federation Reconnaissance Science Vessel) is an excellent ship for PvE and I've run quite a few STFs in one. If you're going to experiment with MU ships, snag one and give it a go. With the right consoles and BOff layout, it's surprisingly potent. I'll happily take on any ship in the game in one and, usually, win.

If you like science vessels, or science oriented ships at least forget about the Sovereign. That is more of a tac. oriented ship. Ofcourse unless you really like the Sovereign, then by all means go for it. ( I myself pick my ships by what I like, then make them work after )

If you feel more like flying something more sci.oriented, your T5 Ambassador Retrofit is actually quite good sci.cruiser. If you don't like it you may consider the Science Odyssey. I must agree with you, I also don't like the looks of the T5 sci. ships, but then I kinda' like the Vesta look, so it might be worth considering, it's arguably the best sci. ship out there.

But, maybe the best solution would be for you to try getting a mirror sci. vessel, for example the mirror deep-space sci.vessel as suggested by another player before. They're pretty cheap on the exchange, around 50K EC and you can try how it goes and get a better hang on end-game gameplay before you decide wheather you want to spend zen on something more expensive.

Cheers!

They are not only reversed in their starship models, also their stats differ a bit.
Havent compared all mirror ships but it seems some have also a different boff/console layout. (?)

The free Patrol Escort is fine ship for end-game PVE. The free Hargh'ta Bird of Prey is a fine ship too, a bit fragile but if you learn to use cloak you will live. I am flying the Ambassador now and it is alright. I am going to start flying the free Kamarag pretty soon, I hear very good things about it. End-game PVE with any of these ships is np.

PVP is different, not really viable to use those ships and pick-up gear against Fleet ships and equipment

After looking at the various options a bit more closely--with everyone's advice in mind--I think I'll take the Advanced Escort for free--I'm not an escort fan, but the science bent is appealing, and I have a cruiser at that tier. Buy the Mirror Universe Science ship on the exchange, and I've got everything I'll need for dirt cheap.
