Think I may have replied to one of these things before... but I've probably acquired a couple more ships since then.
Anyway. When I realized I was going to go through several ships, I decided I needed a consistent naming scheme... and I used the names (or bits of the names) of various compositions by Gustav Holst, who's one of my favourite composers. He's best known for the "Planets" suite, but so far I've steered clear of that one.
So, to date it's
Light cruiser - USS Hammersmith
Cruiser - USS Beni Mora
Heavy Cruiser - USS Brook Green
Exploration Cruiser - USS Egdon Heath
Assault Cruiser - USS Savitri
Mirror Universe Assault Cruiser - USS Sita (my main ship for a good long while)
Mirror Universe Star Cruiser - USS Cloud Messenger
Mirror Universe Reconnaisance Science Vessel - USS Boar's Head
Mirror Universe Deep Space Science Vessel - ISS Hampshire
Recluse Carrier - USS King Estmere (currently my main ship)
Chel Grett Cruiser - USS Bleak Midwinter
Tuffli freighter - SS Rigs o'Marlow
Class F shuttle - USS Moorside
Aeon timeship - USS Walt Whitman
.. I haven't unpacked the Ambassador yet, I'll have to find one for that. (There are still a few left I can use!)
I started a science officer toon, too, using a similar scheme, this time the works of Sibelius. So far, I've just had the USS Oceanides and USS Lemminkainen on that one.
I knew I'd been in this thread before... Things got worse when I took the plunge and became a lifer... so add
Ambassador Class Support Cruiser - USS Golden Goose
Chimera Heavy Destroyer - USS Perfect Fool (because what other sort of person would buy a life sub ? )
Captain's Yacht - USS Cotswold
Tactical Escort Retrofit - USS Somerset
Holst's ballet suite The Perfect Fool has three main sections... so, when the Kumari escorts came out (and, playing an Andorian, I had to, didn't I?), those became:-
Charal Class Escort - IGV Spirits of Earth
Khyzon Class Escort - IGV Spirits of Water
Kumari Class Escort - IGV Spirits of Fire
based on those three sections of the ballet!
To top it all off...
Temporal Science Vessel - USS Indra
If I keep this up much longer, I'm going to have to dig Holst up and make him write some more tunes.
U.S.S. Da Vinci- Miranda class
I chose this name because I wanted a ship name that was fitting for an Engineer character. In the end, I went for Da Vinci, because what name was more fitting than that of one of the wackiest inventors in human history?
U.S.S. Hadrian- Excalibur class
I knew that I wanted to give my Cruiser a classical-sounding name while still carrying on the theme of Enginer-related names. In the end, I settled on the Hadrian, named after the Roman Emperor who had built Hadrian's Wall in Great Britain. I figured that the name was appropriate, as Starfleet is, in many ways, a bulwark against hostile enemy races just as Hadrian's Wall was a barrier against the Picts.
U.S.S. Babylon- Dakota class
Initially, I had named my heavy cruiser the Calatrava, after contemporary bridge engineer Santiago Calatrava. However, in the end, I switched its name to the Babylon for a number of reasons-- firstly, because the name sounds cool, and secondly...well, just look at my user name. It helps that the aft "loop" of the Dakota class kind of reminds me of the White Star.
Chimera Destroyer: (Dbb, Omega torp, cannons/turrets) with CSV-3, TFS-3 and FAW-2
add in the Phaser Lotus, attack patterns, burn a weapon battery, and my alpha becomes a massive blast of AOE that obliterates just about everything around me.
Just like the "Death Blossom" weapon in the 80's movie "The Last Starfighter"
