I also agree with the OP, captain only boff skills suck.

Just about everything you read in these forums is about people wanting to optimize the various "builds" whether its the ship build, the capt skills or boff layouts, even doffs used for space or ground. For people who take team play seriously and want to "do their part" in team play, all boff skills should be accessible to them.

What we need, and i'll draw some fire here from my fellow forumites, is a dillithium bridge trainer who for a quantity of dilithium will train skills formerly only available from certain very rare boffs and certain captains with points in the related skill. With this approach very rare boffs are still valuable as would be the ability to train the skill yourself, as it would be a cost savings for the ever increasingly valuable currency dilithium!

I agree with this - 5000d to train a lv3 skill would be a fair price for the luxury of having the very best skills without hassle, plus remove the possibility of losing your highly trained boffs (the number of tss3 trained boffs I've lost on my klink engie while asking for gw3 among others...) - far fairer than 5000d to upgrade a duty officer, at least...

It looks like the system as we have it gives an extra flair to specialisation, but that is false. Everybody can have Torpedo spread III, the Jem'haddar Boff, and everybody can have Rapid Fire III, trained by another Tac Captain that can train it.

So, I think just as the OP, we can get rid of this cumbersome system and have all abillities be trainable at the Boff trainer.

Another thing I would like to see. Once a Boff is trained in a certain skill, I don't want him to forget it. I mean, when I change ship and reallocate my Boffs, in most cases, one or two need some other skills which they are using now an I have to go to the trainer. When I swap ship again ... same thing again.

I don't want a big thing, every skill on my boff, just a couple. It is like an sales agent that speaks french. You send him to France. Then you want him to go to Germany, but he has to learn German first. Then he goes again to France again, but first he has to learn french. That doesn't make sense, does it.

At first I had no problem with asking someone to drop everything their doing to come meet me some place and train my boff in a skill only players can train. It made it feel more 'mmo'.

But, as more time goes on, it just gets frustrating and feels like a stupid game design. These are people you have to ask to train you're officers and most the time, they're busy doing their own thing, and the rest of the time they forget you asked. Add on top of that the potential for theft and that it's forced interaction (I loathe being forced), it can quickly become a frustrating headache.

I know someone will say it's not 'forced' blah blah you can just gimp yourself and use the lower rank version of a skill, but I see that as proof of the problem. I also can't always ask someone I trust because I never trust someone in an mmo 100%. And the entire act of asking makes me feel like a nag.

Hey can anyone train my boff in blah blah?
Hello anyone?
Stop what you're doing and train my boffs please
...Okay it's been 2 days, can anyone help me?

Yea no thanks, I don't much like being a bother to people. I humbly request for an alternate method.
I agree something needs to be done with this. Introduce a new easy to use mechanic (tradeable BOff data pads the skill can be trained to perhaps) or completely dump the original concept and add everything to the current BOFF trainer.

Thats one point for sto being a mmo, and a point for fleets to exist. And if it takes you 2 days for a skilltrain, then sorry, you have joint a unfriendly fleet or are online, when no one else is. In our fleet, something like this takes a minute or two.

And forced to.... xD

There are 2 problems with the sysyem as it is.

1: Trying to find someone who not only has a toon of the right class, but also has put the 3 or 6 ranks in the right skill to unlock the ability to train in the skill your looking for. Which for alot of skills isn't a big issue since they are linked to skills almost all players are going to put ranks into, but for some skills you looking for someone who has a very rare/odd build.

2: Having to trade a boff to someone. This has two problems, the first is it opens you up to having the boff stole, its rare but it does happen. The second problem is it requires the person to have a open boff slot to be able to help. All my toons use all my boff slots, for my ships and/or awayteam layouts. So even though I'd be more then willing to help someone i can't.

Forgive a noob his question but how does the process of someone else training your boff even work? I can't seem to move my boffs to inventory or anything for trade. Is there a separate special UI? A button to press? A key to hit?

Can a person make a 2nd/3rd character and level up their skills enough to train the 1st character's boffs? Is it something you can mail between characters? Does it require a 2nd account with dual boxing to do it?

*sigh* so confused...

I dislike captain trained abilities, but if they made it so I didn't have to actually trade the boff to another player then I could live with it. As it is now, like what happened to me just the other day, I finally find somebody to train my eng boff, and they didn't have an empty boff slot. I did not have one either, and the system was not even intelligent enough to allow us to trade boffs to each other simultaneously so we wouldn't be over the limit... still no go.

If you see me in my Ody and I'm only using EWP2, you can blame shoddy UI code...
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!

If we could just mail our boffs to ourselves that would make me happy.

Using a eng that has a sci that needs training? ... right in the mail.

Train up,

Right back in the mail.

Heck i would even be happy enough to have to spend expertise points all over again on all skills if thats a limiting factor as to why we cant mail boffs :/

You can only trade boffs by meeting another person on a ground map and using the trade window. And note that to do that you have to have already removed all items from the boff (possibly only all bound items, but I always assume it's all items for safety). That means that there is no way to have different toons on the same account train each other's boffs except by going through a second party.
