I'll admit to being curious enough that I will probably start a Rommie alt once it goes live. I currently have 2 Feds and a KDF, but the KDF side doesn't really float my boat. I'm hoping the Romulans are more interesting.
Uh, let's see: begged for one during beta, begged for years playing game, finally quit game right before duty officer patch and the ONLY REASON I am coming back to play in May is to finally play my Romulan that I should have had at game launch.
I wanted Romulans since I heard there was an ST IP MMO in the works.
Having additional factions provides for more opportunities for factional and generic content.
And now for the big kicker to all of this...IF Cryptic can work up the Romulan faction with leveling content from 1-50 AND add in additional leveling content for KDF to fill in the 1-20 levels and while doing all of this manage to add in new features, new rep system, new FEs AND new STFs with the majority of the work being done in 6 months, just imagine how much content they can generate for the "seasons" while moving the game forward.
I think we should all give Cryptic the chance to bring out the Romulan faction and the rest of the content that they're planning on adding into the expansion just to see what they can do when they get down to it.
It seems to be an unfortunate effect on MMOs.
Look at WoW, where they quickly turned the Blood Elves from a ruthless and scarred people out for power and revenge on the Alliance who betrayed them into High Elves with green eyes.
If you're not familiar with ********, essentially they took a race that was very much like the classic Romulans, and turned them into stereotypical good guy elves.
That's just one example. It seems MMO developers are afraid that factions with nefarious intent just won't be popular.
Edit: Are you telling me the name WoW stands for is blocked? Really? REALLY? Fail more plz.
I think the problem is the OP suggest that a Romulan Faction means no more development for KDF or the Feds.
This just not the case. Even if this expansion is very Romulan centered (and lets face it with the amount of things that would have to be part of ANY new faction, how could it not), that in no way suggests they are done with the Feds or KDF. Season 8, Back when it was still "season 8" was suppose to reintroduce the featured episodes. Which should be all relatively agnostic.
And lets be honest, No matter how many factions they release (my dream will always be 5. FED, KDF, RSE, CU, and Dominion), The Federation will always be the most popular. Most popular means more potential money, so there is no way they are abandoning that.
New factions are necessary for the future game. Now that is an interesting statement. People who play STO now are those who want to. I doubt very much there are a whole mass of masses out there who are saying, "I dont play STO but, I would play STO if it had a playable Romulan faction." Creating new factions does not mean we get more people playing STO necessarily.
I am happy those interested in a Romulan faction got this new addition. But I will not play it. Why?
I have 7 Characters, 4 Federation, 3 Klingon. I only have so much time to play. As it is I spend most of my time grinding for rep and fleet star base and operations. Soon we will hit T5 on our base. when that happens i intend for the slave grinding to end. I will not make another character, a Romulan character, because there is no way I want to grind all this again. At some point I want to stop grinding and just play for fun.
Each new faction will absolutely, positively, inevitably, and certainly add to the grind. No thanks.
Content for existing factions first. Consistent development for the KDF to bring them on par with the Federation side should be first priority. There is an established customer base there that should be respected so they will keep on keeping on.
Development should be done evenly for all factions. If the federation gets a ship pack the KDF should get a counter. This builds the sense of rivalry that boosts game interest instead of fueling dissent. Now, with a third faction, it would require a ship pack for all three factions to keep it even. Add another faction? Now it requires 4 ship packs and so on.
Chingachgook told me, Don't try to understand them; and don't try to make them understand you. For they are a breed apart and make no sense.
