I think the OP would rather get the advice he's asking for - how to optimize an HEC beam boat for PvE.

It's true it may be more efficient to play the 'correct' way, but honestly it's much more important to know what you're doing than it is to be super optimized in PvE. You might not be as speedy and you might not be as able to carry a noob team on your back, but there's nothing wrong with a build that's optimized within the parameters of the player's preferences.

I can appreciate that. As I said, a beamscort PvE setup in the correct hands is eminently workable, but you do have to know going in that it won't be the most efficient means to slag things.

To be fair, Pug quality isn't the best benchmark. Sometimes you'll get a squad that just demolishes things, other times you'll get a squad that clearly has no idea what the hell it's doing.

My pleasure. The thing I'll leave you with is this: don't be afraid to experiment with unorthodox designs. I know you're looking for a beam-oriented build...but don't be afraid to try out some different setups. DHCs, Torpedoes, Mines, Single cannons, all can be combined in very creative, and oftentimes hilarious, ways.

I'll just make the comment that Armitage is really an Escort with a carrier capability. Its not a carrier first, its an Escort first. It should be setup and used as an Escort. If the OP wants a carrier with beams and all that, look at the Vesta line, there's probably one there that will suit his needs.

For weapons use the Omega cutting beam, and Omega Torp if you must have a torp, romulan beam and the rest plasma.

The romulan beam does not suffer drain as severe when using BO and aside from that is an insanely huge boost to beam boat DPS.

Also grab a copy of DEM and the boff that reduces weapon drain when using it.

Beyond that though not much you can do.

Nope, i want Escort with beams and all that. Unusual - I know. Less Effective - I know.

Then go dual beams in front and arrays in back. When you attack, go broadside. That will up your DPS better than the turrets in back.

Remember your procs when choosing weapons. Phasers are good, as they'll chance dropping shields. Not so much on Borg, but very well against the others.

Think about buying the Danube pets for the tractor beams. Wonderful for holding your target broadside.

Wrong. DBBs up front mean you lose your frontal firepower when broadsiding.

I use that set up on my Excelsior and don't have a problem. It takes time to learn the "sweet spot", but it can be done. DBB are a 90 deg the Arrays are a 250 deg. Hit just right with a wide quantum launcher, and the damage is surprising.

The following is the Beams-heavy HEC I used for the better part of 5 months. With my Science Captain I was quite able to handle probe duty, my cube, and my transformer solo in E-STF's.

------------------------------------------

Ship: Akira-class (sucker for the classics) Heavy Escort Carrier

-[Weapons]-

Fore: 3 Phaser Beam Arrays Mk XI [Acc] [CrtH], 1 Wide-Angle Quantum Torpedo Launcher

Aft: 3 Phaser Beam Arrays Mk XI [Acc] [CrtH]

-[Equipment]-

Deflector: Omega Mk XI (sub in Borg Deflector if not skilled in flow capacitors)

Engine: Omega Mk XI (sub in Borg Engines if not skilled in flow capacitors)

Shield: MACO Mk XI

Hangar: Advanced Peregrine Fighters

-[Consoles]-

Engineering: Torpedo Point-Defense Console, Assimilated Console, RCS Console Mk XI Rare

Science: 2 Field Generators (Flow Caps are probably a better choice w/ Tet Glider, in retrospect)

Tactical: 4 Phaser Relay Mk XI Rare

-[Bridge Officer Powers]-

Commander Tactical: Tactical Team / Torpedo Spread 2 / Attack Pattern Beta 2 / Attack Pattern Beta 3

Lieutenant Tactical: Tactical Team / Fire-at-Will 2

Ensign Tactical: Fire-at-Will 1

Lieutenant Commander Engineer: Emergency Power to Weapons 1 / Emergency Power to Shields 2 / Eject Warp Plasma 1

Lieutenant Science: Hazard Emitters 1 / Transfer Shield Strength 2

-[Duty Officers]-

3 Rare Damage Control Engineers (Very Rare is ideal), 2 Purple Shield Distribution Officers

-------------------------

Basically, just fly broadside, keep AP:B up at all times, and keep blazing away. The Damage Control Engineer DOffs did a good job of keeping both EPtX's up, and the wide-angle torp and, if needed, torp PDS could laydown a very large amount of damage against targets with broken shield facings pointed at you. The Quantum-torp shooting Peregrines could add a further large amount of damage to the target when its shields were down, and benefited nicely from DR debuff from both my own Sensor Scan and the mighty Attack Pattern Beta 3. Eject Warp Plasma is a great power to have, one that can stall a probe wave for you, tie up a bunch of spheres, and protect you from heavy torpedoes fired by Cubes and Gates. It also neuters the Defense score of mobile targets, meaning FAW misses dramatically less than it normally does in its currently bugged form.

No AP:O means be very wary of getting much within 5 km of a target lest you get tractor beamed. You'll often be flying around with a wing of pets behind you, do *not* play chicken with the Negh'vars in Cure. If you do... you're gonna have a bad time, mmmkay?
If you feel Keel'el's effect is well designed, please, for your own safety, be very careful around shallow pools of water.
