Is it just me, or does it seem that if the Romulans were portrayed in that movie the way they were in the various series the Tal Shiar would have found out about the Hobus plot and stopped it, then had everyone involved along with their families tortured then executed. Most likely in a public fashion as a deterrant to anyone else who may have similar ideas.

"This" Romulus is part of, or at the very least a direct result of "that" Romulus. There's really not much difference.

Play the Taris mission then get back to me on that.

Yes.....Civil wars that were written in by Cryptic....completely in-line with my point. Cryptic is takign the 'Romulans are in distress!' themes of Nemesis and 2009 in which the Rommies got stomped on all over and running with it. As someone who likes neither movie, I can't say I appreciate Cryptic taking those themes and overemphasizing them even further.

Yup. Which I believe is a valid criticism. It's not even consistent with their previously establsihed background, and considering how much of this writing, even this Romulan Republic stuff seems set up as a Congo line of Romulan humiliation, I think some criticism is in order.

Well, you're entitled to have your opinion. But, other people are entitled to ignore it. :p

Ditto for yours. But it's not exactly a terribly compelling argument for your own opinion to dismiss those of others solely on the basis of them being a differing opinion.

Ditto for yours.

I find the story that Cryptic has laid out to be a logical progression from the state they were in at the start of the STO storyline. The leadership of Romulus changed TWICE in Nemesis, with both of them getting killed. Tal'Aura killed the senate and Praetor Hiren so that Shinzon could take over. Shinzon is nuts, and gets killed in battle along with his flagship. It makes sense for there to be a power struggle in the wake of that. Especially when you add the turmoil of the simultaneous Reman rebellion.

I personally find it to be a very understandable and compelling story of a power struggle. Then it plays out for a few years, and you have the Hobus disaster which turns the drama meter up a few notches. Along the way some of the players in the power struggle get bumped off. Then the in-game story starts and you have the RSE trying to pick up the pecies of not one but several major disasters. From that perspective it doesn't make sense for the RSE to be the same as it was before.

Given the overarching story of "the iconians are screwing with everyone" they have only one other narrative choice (dominion) and as cool as that would have been, it's off screen and it doesn't buy any appreciation from movie fans.

Can't gimp the feds or klings because the players need enough infrastructure and because they're the heroes.

Cardiassians are already gimps post dominion war so pounding on them doesn't impress anyone.

Undine, Tholians and borg are bad guys, gimping them means you can't use them as villains. Hell, they had to repower the borg just to bring 'em back in as a credible threat.

Could invent a completely new non-cannon race, but then all the fans would flip over their favorite race not getting as much attention. Plus, really, none of us would be impressed if all Hakeev did was kill one redshirt, so for the same reason we couldn't take the iconians serously if they only killed some random race of redshirts.

That only leaves the romulan star empire and the dominion as a demonstration of the iconian power. The movies already gimped the romulans and causing a supernova that takes out one of the most powerful races in the galaxy is a great way for a villain to say "look at me I'm more dangerous than the borg and undine". which the iconians have to do in some way or everyone just yawns because both of those have already been beaten.

Personally, I'd rather have seen the dominion take the hit. I think that would have been a far more impressive display of iconian power, and it would open up a LOT more potential story. But I think the opportunity to tie into the movie was an opportunity they couldn't pass up.

From a business standpoint I suspect it was the right call, as the movie is quite popular and since they can't license it directly, at least that reference to it wins them brownie points with the fans.

From a narrative standpoint, I still wish it was the dominion and not the romulans who got shafted.

Again, I'm not saying the Narada will happen. But I do see room for the possibility that it could happen. There was someone working together with CBS and Paramount way back when.[/quote]

It could happen, but lets hope that it doesn't. It's a god awfully ugly ship. It doesn't look Romulan, its crew didn't look Romulan. Don't we have enough JJ-ish faux Romulan stuff in game now? Like the bald hair dos and massively ugly face tattoos.

How much more of the 2009 shtick do the Romulan fans in this game have to be subjected to. I've watched the new movie twice hoping that it would get better or that it would rub off on me- just gets worse with time. If Narada ends up in game you'll never have five minutes peace from the reminder of what's happened to the IP. I can choose to ignore anything ST Abrams related if it stays away from STO and new Trek fans can always watch the movie, read the comic and buy the toys/models for the ship if they just have to have it so badly.
