Well, when I came to this game in F2P, I had just left Battlestar Galactica Online. I was dissatisfied with the emphasis away from Vipers and on really stupid mini-Battlestars. I used to be a Viper pilot (partly the reason I still call players in ships "pilots") and used to the high damage roles in a fighter.

Well, I decided to do something different. After flying a bunch of similar ships like the Viper, with high damage output and turn rates, I eventually decided that the best ship is a cruiser, at least for me. I liked the looks, I liked the survivability, I liked the tankiness.

13 months later, and I'm still flying cruisers. Despite the nerfs, until true cruiser piloting becomes infeasible and dangerous, I'm sticking to cruisers.

I'm not in game right now, but right off the top of my head...

Fore Weapons: 3 Rom DHC [acc]x2, 1 Rom DBB [acc]x2, 1 Rom Hyper Plasma Torp
Aft Weapons: 1 Rom Turret [acc]x2, KCB

Borg MK 12 Deflector and Engine, Elite Fleet ResB Shields.

Eng Consoles: Borg, Tachyokinetic, Zero Point
Sci Consoles: Embassy Plasma infused MK 12, VR MK 12 Field Generator
Tac Consoles: 5 VR MK 12 Plasma

Commander Tac (Romulan): TT1, CRF1, THY3, APO3
Lt. Com. Tac (human): TT1, CSV1, BO3
Lt. Tac (Human): TS1, CRF1

Ensign Eng (Lib. Borg Efficient): EPtS1

Uni Lt. (Vet. Human): TSS1, HE2

Basic gameplay - Crf to soften shields, then HYT3 and BO3 to bare hull. If the target is not dead by then, another crf to finish the job. CSV and TS just to clear spam. after the first alpha, I fly out of the fray and wait for either the next target to be called, or pick out the weakest of the bunch and repeat.

As for me, I took a Sci toon from the start, given my fascination with science in real-life. Then I ran into the DPS-focused meta of PvE, and so I grabbed an escort. Started out in PvP with that, but then got a little bored after a while. It feels like there are only so many ways you can build an escort, eh? Not to mention there isn't much you can do once you find yourself being unable to spike someone's shields off.

I decided then to 'play my career' to the hilt and started working the Sci debuffer/healer route, and pretty much never looked back. The combination of survivability, versatility, space magic and being able to support my team was what did it for me, while retaining some killing power. In effect, a Sci is the swiss army knife to the Tac Broadsword. When I first started pugging, there weren't that many competent Sci players around, and I liked being a little different from the crowd.

Like the subnuke officer's in-game quote, "The cunning blow is sometimes weightier than the strong blow." The Sci is the embodiment of the cunning blow, and that's why it's my main.

For me, finding a playstyle was simple. My first priority was to be unique.

When I came to STO, every single one of the PVP pros told me to roll a dual heavy cannon tac, as that was (and is) the win-button of STO.

... so I decided to go into torpedoes instead.

My second priority was to become really good at PVP. Everyone said the best PVPers were Klingons, and I should play with them.

... so I rolled a Fed instead. One does not sharpen one's teeth eating pre-chewed meat.

I'm having a blast as the result of my decisions. I'm pretty sure I have one of the most lethal torpedo setups in game right now. I can fly screaming into a ball of angry klingons, and manage to kill one or two or even three, even if they're ready for me.

But uh... don't follow in my footsteps, or anything... torpedoes suck, as any STO pro will tell you. :p

If you could be so kind as to share your build?
I too fly a wells and enjoy the type of way you play, but I've been having trouble getting an efficient build together, any help you could offer would be mighty appreciated.

For PvP, it really depends on the team I have which class I'd like to be. I do prefer to fly escorts type ships though, love speed tanking.

A lot of people don't believe me (because I've long since lost the art) but I originally flew a Tactical snoozer... my first "real" ship was the C-store Excel (there were no Fleet ships back then). I adored that thing, my first few attempts at builds were terrible but I learned mostly the hard way (I even remember battling a good friend of mine in Ker'rat and predictably getting creamed).

I really had to be dragged into escorts... I'm just as, if not more in love with them now, but I do sometimes have fond memories of the Excel. I didn't really have any help in those days and I'm proud I learned so much about reaction timing, breaking game systems down, etc.

I adapted my RP roles.

For my Fed main, his ship of choice is the Armitage, and he's a tactical officer who likes to actually use tactics. So I set him up as a speed tank loaded with attack patterns to maximize damage and survivability. I run with the full AEGIS set, mostly because it looks as cool as all hell, but also the defensive bonus and adaptive shield are perfect for the speed tank style. His favorite thing in the world to do is to bounce around a furball spamming CSV3 until the enemy's shields are shredded, then press The Button That Makes Everybody Die. It doesn't always work, but it always makes me laugh.

My KDF main is a Gorn engineer. I set him up with the Tyrannosaurus rex of battlecruisers, the Tac Bortasqu'. It's rigged to deliver massive spike damage while absorbing a ton of punishment. It's not a heal tank, it's just there to hurt people and last in the fight as long as possible. And with Aux2Damp, APO and EM, it's way more agile than you'd imagine possible. Again, it doesn't always work perfectly, but I laugh every time I unload the disruptor autocannon into someone followed by a Breen cluster torp.

The key thing to me is to find a playstyle and build that makes you laugh every time you use it.

It takes a lot of Trial and error, i was never really great at anything, i was always at my best in a Sci/Sci healer, but you can have the best gear in the game and it wont matter if your pugging 95% of the time, its easy to get turned off from a build, ship or career getting best 15-0 all night long. my best advice is to try and find a few guys to team with while you workout whats best for you. in the End this is still a team based game.

Alright, but bear in mind that it's a pug build, and is as such a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. You'll probably want to be a bit more specialised in a team. Also, it's a torp boat, so you may need to get a bit used to it.

Shields/Deflector/Engines:
MACO/Adapted MACO/Adapted MACO (extra torp damage) OR Full MACO (for graviton beam)

Sci: Tachyokinetic, 3xParticle Gen
Tac: 3xPlasma torp damage

Doffs (all purple):
