Conversely, adding group support abilities to Engineering BOFFs (including "aura" type abilities) would go a long way towards adding some badly needed variety to cruiser loadouts.

Easiest way is to have toned down versions of things like Tac/Sci/Engi fleet (with some tweaked bonuses of course) or a version of the Jemmy fleet buff console.

Romulans fly warbirds not weak weapon toting, subsystem targeting science ships. Besides farmboys, unificationists and epohh taggers really have no use for ships like the Nebula or the Intrepid.

It's been my experience that ships which speed tank, tend to spend the most key moments for when they need support, out of range of said support. As they speed off and get more than 10km away. Then work on healing themselves up.

Also, powers like Gravity Well, along with say the Andorian Wing Cannon AoE, makes the idea of sticking close by for the benefits of an Aura, a tactical error.

The aura may not have a range, it may simply be for anyone on your team, in which case "sticking close" would not be required... it also would be a mistake to cluster what with scramble sensors or being prime targets for scatter volley and torp spread.

Though I agree with your earlier sentiment about science vessels. While romulans may have had such vessels, it's far more likely that their warbirds were simply equipped to perform whatever scientific functions the empire pursued. Too bad the devs won't let us have all universals, then a sci character could fly a warbird super sci heavy if they wanted to.
