I tried it with my Orion character for the Crystal entity and it didn't seem to do enough, as it still had more then enough to bring me down from 100% down to 50% in one of its special attacks one way or another, and by itself with everybody focusing on the Tholians it hardly did any damage at all, my power setting in aux was 50% as this was in my kar'Fi. i think i will be replacing it with gravity well since that at least stops ships or slowed them down while doing a lil bit of damage...that alone makes it more useful.

Tyken's and Syphon are both still rather weak at this point. If you want to do a Drain boat you NEED the Plasmodic Leech console, Aeceton Assimilators, Polaron Weapons, and tons of points and consoles into Flow Capacitors.


As for GW... lol... Its damage is hardly worth talking about even under the best of circumstances and it can barely hold the weakest of ships if you do not get an Aftershock.

Oh yes I do have the purple doff set for the aftershock affect and I noticed that it did make a good bit of difference its main affect is slowing down ships so you can hit them with the cannons, not so affective in PVP. You are correct about the damage bit, but it does do a tiny bit but no I wont use that unless I have to deal every bit of damage I possibly can. (clock running low)

Guess Tykens Rift III is a sore point with not just me but quite a lot of other people as well? Good. I feel like most of the people who complained about the builds anyway were annoyed cause it made them feel less useful and were too lazy to spec in power insulators in pvp. (You'd be amazed how much that just 3 in power insulators and playing as an Engineer makes you resistant to this attack - yes I just suggested that engineers were the counter to this attack! Actually that makes it sound like nerfing Tyken's Rift III hit Engineers as well, I suppose in a way it did.)

Engys and Sci's are sadly relegated to the nosebleeds in STO, progressively since season 6.

I keep reading about how things used to be and it seems like they had it right at one time. What ever reason brought about this change, monetary concerns, PvP tears, what ever it was, I wish they would reconsider what they have done.

I don't really have an issue with my Engy (although, I don't PvP either). Yes Tactical is god, but the skills given to an Engineer are enough that I don't feel useless in something like an Elite STF. My Engy is not only resilient, but deals some decent hurt, thanks to power management skills.

Bringing a Sci though, seems like something you do as joke. Like making a Rainbow boat for laughs.

I expect there's heaps of truth in this thread, particularly energy drain abilities seem to fall short of incapacitating an enemy. Unless there is something overlooked. Maybe nothing is being overlooked.

In the case of Gravity Well, the issue is stuff moving away. Graviton Pulse is a good solution mentioned here, albeit with a long cool down. Another option is Eject Warp Plasma. It holds, it does hull damage. It requires a Lieutenant Commander Engineer to deploy it, but it can be done. Another option is Photonic Shockwave. It knocks things out of the Well, but they quickly float back in while stunned, and the Shockwave may push critters into the well more often than not if you have timing.

Of course, all of this requires you to get to point blank range with your enemy. That's exciting, right? Excepting swarms of Borg. You can only purge so many tractor beams.

I guess I really need to generate DPS numbers before I'll convince anyone, and there's nearly always one or two Escorts who beat me in Starbase 24. I am hoping Elite goodies will allow me to swap an Emitter Array for yet another Particle Generator to be properly dangerous. Science can do pretty well, although I'm not sure we have many options that work. I've only tried one. They definitely used to be easier to find.

Fair to say, without these energy drain builds. STO has become a lot more boring? Yes/No? I know those fleet shields everyone keeps complaining about (and rightly so, they are ridiculous) wouldn't stand a chance against an old drain build.

Annoying fact is, we have yet to hear from a dev why they neutered it so much. As far as I can tell there was no official explanation given.
