Title pretty much sums it up. I spoke with Commander Balt in Starbase 01 and he mentions about training your officers yourself with the skill tree abilities when you max them at 9 (i.e. Torpedo: High Yield III, Cannon: Rapid Fire III, Beam: Fire At Will III etc.), but doesn't exactly say how to do so. Anyone have a clue?

(Sorry if this has already been posted, boards are a mess to go through. My apologies)

Well first, your captain has to be the same profession as the BO you want to train. Engineer captains can only train Engineer BO powers, not tac or sci.

Then you rank up the relevant power to rank 9, it should give you a message that you can now offer training in that skill.

Then you go to the character screen, select your captain, and along the bottom there should be a button that says train. Press it and its just like training BOs at the trainer.

They really need to remove those tooltips from the captain skill trees if you aren't that specific class. It's really misleading and the source of lots of confusion.

I'd go one further and say:

1. People should be able to train any BO with any Tier III skill if they invested the 9/9 points, regardless of if your profession.

2. Training Tier III skills should be on a cooldown.

3. BOs should be able to be traded after being trained. Why would an experienced officer be decommissioned? He'd just be reassigned... And sometimes transferred as part of a promotion. Doesn't make sense, and would add an actual element of crafting to the game.

I rather they just enable it. I mean engineer or tactical captain, if I've got rank 9 in torpedoes, I know everything there is to know about them.

It really unnecessarily hurts cross class captains, like engineer/escort captains. Ranking up engineering skills to train officers is useless except for ground skills in that situation.

Yes I agree. Training up to 9 in something should indicate that your captain has studied it well, even if he isn't a tac officer himself.

Sorry, I still don't get the idea. You mean :
My engineer has level 1 Emergency to Shield. If he max that out, I mean put 9 points into this level 1 skill, he then can be trained by my captain to level 2 and level 3? I am confused...

No.

First I need to go over some terminology, which is all my own, and is only being used for the sake of clarity. When I say 'you,' I mean your captain. If I say BO, I mean a bridge officer. I'm going to call the things YOU put points into in the captain tree 'traits', and things BOs use 'skills'. For example, Science Vessel is a trait, Torpedo Spread I is a skill.

Skills can have tiers I through III. Traits can be level 1-9.

You have a lot of traits that you can train up in, which you can level from 1 to 9. Certain CAPTAIN traits, when they are leveled to 9, allow you to train a BO to have a tier III skill.

So if I train up my trait 'ship deflectors' to 9, I can teach a science BO the skill Tachyon Beam III (this is just a made up example, I don't remember the actual trait name). I can ONLY teach this to a science BO if I am a science captain.

So Science captains can teach Science BOs Science skills if they have leveled the appropriate trait to 9.

Oh , I see. For example, I have Eng. Capt. If I put 9 points on Star Ship Aux. System Maintenance, I can train my BO who has emergency power to aux, correct? (train him to lvl 3 or only 1 more level above the original skill level)?

Thanks!
