Is the dps what makes a hard hitting weapon or is the number listed in the damage rating?

I have skimmed through beginner stuff but I have a hard time searching for it on here.

DPS is damage per time, and thus is a good number to work by if you're concerned with your sustained damage.

If you're interested in maximizing burst damage, then you should look at the damage rating number, and try to find the largest possible.

In general, larger damage means slower recharge, thus evening out the dps.

DPS just stands for Damage Per Second. Damage just tells you how much damage it does in one shot, without taking into account how slowly the weapon fires.

A high weapon damage can still have low DPS, if the time between attacks is long. Quantum torpedoes and Plasma Beam Arrays, for example.

so are you better off looking at combining the rechqarge rate and damage output of all the weapons on your ship, kind of a dosps (damage of ship per second)? if you load more faster recharging weapons/skills on a ship are you better off with more low recharge weapons than stronger high recharge weapons?

It depends on a lot of factors, including how you like to play, how you like your battles to go, and what sort of ship you're flying, with what sort of BO skills.

For example, many people flying escorts enjoy high burst damage weapons, as they like to fly in, engage the enemy, do massive damage, and fly out prior to taking too much damage, as they can't take much.

Some people flying cruisers like stacking up on sustained dps, since they can definitely afford to sit around.

Also, you should take into account the range of the weapon -- weapons that have wider arcs have a tendency to do less damage.

Personally, on my science vessel, I like using high burst torpedos (i.e. not photons) with HYT to give them a huge burst damage, along with phaser banks (so I can broadside to lower shields, or use targetting subsystems to bring them down).
