Where did you get that? A character wipe was announced before Open Beta started, and had been discussed at length many times since.

Unless you intentionally avoided the forums throughout Open Beta, as in, NEVER came on, EVER, there's no way this should be a suprise.

Beta is over, the game is live. I can't think of a single MMO that let you carry over beta characters.

You do know what a beta is, right?

wipe after closed beta
wipe after open beta

did you not pre-order the game and play the head start? Those characters were kept.

LOTRO let you keep your open beta characters. However that game was extremely polished, stable, nearly bug free and content complete. It was possibly the smoothest MMO launch in online game history.

There should be only be one appropriate response: "They're dead, Jim."

They're not dead!

Don't worry. They are living their lives in the mirror "betaverse," where the Klingons are slaves to their tribble-petting compulsion and every borg looks like Seven of Nine. So don't go looking for them, because it would be like snatching them back from heaven.

Man, the guy just asked a simple question. Do all you live in your mother's basement 30 year old Star Trek nerd/geeks really need to be jerks to him with your replies? I mean seriously, its a forum board where people will ask questions and you flame the guy.
