Two bits of advice that made my life a ton easier:
-When in space, hit the P button to pull up your list of abilities, and set the one that balances your shields out into your quickslot toolbar. Helps loads when getting hit from multiple directions and you lack a third hand to assist you with all the crazy keyboarding/mouse-clicking going on!
-On away missions, don't be afraid to hit the pause button and use the team commands to control your BOffs for a tactical advantage. Just a little practice and you'll be plowing through groups of enemies with little to fear.

I've used the pause twice. once on the Kuvah'magh when my crew took a coffee break without me and another time during the Gateway mission when I forgot to equip a crewmen and I saw a group heading out way. After that, I've found little use for it.
Then again, and OP this works for you as well, once you get PVP geared you really seem to slice through Away Missions like a hot knife through pre-heated butter sticks.
