Hi guys, is there any point using different ranks of the same ability or is it always better to use different skills?

For example on my science officer is it better to use:

Science Team I
Science Team II

or

Hazard Emitters I
Science Team II

Also do ship consoles of the same type stack?

For example if I had 2 +10% to shields capacity would that give me 20% to shield capacity?

Thanks allot

If you have multiples of the same ability, all it means is that you can use it more often. For example, if you used Science Team II then Science Team I will go into a short cooldown - shorter then if you had used it though. It will be available for use way before Science Team II is ready again. Same theory if you had two officers both with Science Team II. This works in a similar fashion with any powers that operate off the same system. So if you had an officer with Engineer Team I and another with Science Team II, same thing would happen because they both work off the system "Crew".

As to the consoles, yes they should stack.

There's a 20s shared cooldown on skills of the same subsystem (Science Team I and II are both under the Crew subsystem). Science Team has a 45s cooldown, so using rank I and II together would let you use it twice as often.

Having learned that the similar abilities share a short cooldown the hard way (I trained up a BO in the second skill before trying it out....)
I can say that having 2 BO's with the same skill, while making it so you can use it slighty more often, really isnt worth it. By the time the shared CD is up the first skill is just about up as well.

I think you'd get more utility having different skills

it's simple math. if a skill has a cool down of 30 sseconds (most tactical attack skills), then two skills with a global cool down of 20 seconds (40 seconds total) means a loss of 10 seconds.

if a skill has a cooldown of 45 seconds and lasts for 30 seconds (science team), then two skills with a global cooldown of 20 seconds means a surplus of 20 seconds of buff, or in other words, infinite buff.

I used Emergency Power to Shields I & II. Other than that I spread it around. I guess the same can be done for Engineering Team.

Last I heard about Consoles Stacking was that consoles do stack, but with diminishing returns.
This means that if you have 2 or 3 consoles with the same bonus you get a reduced bonus added for the 2nd and further reduced for the 3rd.

An example here.
If you equip a console with say +25% turn rate you get the full bonus.
But if you equip 3 of them you dont get +75%, but more like +50% increase.

Actually the prevailing wisdom is that turn rate consoles do not stack. At least from tests I have read about. I am not sure about the other types of consoles.

It's funny someone posted about this. Since I made Commander (and now Captain) on my cruiser and it only has 1x science station I have tractor beam 1 and 2 trained. It can help if I'm getting overwhelmed and need to hold an enemy where I can do most damage or if teamed with an escort the two lots mean swift death. I'm sure there are plenty of other benefits to using other skills but that's why I've got two different science officers to experiment with....... that sounded wrong but I trust you know what I mean.
