You guys that "know" what your doing offer the best excuses for why the IT guys are fail and wil continue to be so. Instead of offering great excuses on their behalf, why dont you just apply and get a job there and offer your "vast knowledge" to fixing the problem instead of justifying the endless server crashes and failure rates.

I don't blame the NOC or Cryptic at all, just wish they would get a backup server for when the current server crashes, they can reroute to the backup server instead of constantly bringing down the server, I am not a tech guy, but, there has to be something other then 4 hours up, 2 hours down.

And as far as Subcontractors are concerned, which I work in construction management, which to a degree compares. If a subcontractors not hacking it, they either bring in more people to get the job done or we hire a different subcontractor who can get the job done.

If you have a water leak, first thing we do is shut the water off, then we find the problem, access the problem, then repair the cosmetics afterward. Sure, that might not have been the problem to begin with, it might have been a leak in a different pipe, so we cut the wall back open and "Take 2". If the problem still occurs, then it is clear that our plumber has no clue where the leak is, so we hire a second opinion before completely gutting the walls. So, I see what's going on and what's been going on as a water leak, and hopefully the powers at be are seriously considering hiring a second opinion before gutting the walls.

Have you ever developed an mmo? NO? Wow that's cool for you. Things will get smoothed out as the days and weeks go by. If your mmo ADD can't handle that, then move on to the next best thing.

What you've just suggested is an important part of professional responsibility when you provide a service like Cryptic is claiming to provide.

God bless them every one. And if they are not the owners of their hardware.... if they are contracting it through a telco.... and they have to rely on telco monkeys .... and oh my...

I'm on vacation and just the thoughts of the possible problems gives me angina.

As an aside... we had one time when a switch wasn't handling spanning tree properly and took out 32 servers that had NICs which didn't establish link integrity until driver load during boot. The result was that ARPs never made it to the network because the switch went into port blocking *permanently*.

By the time I made it into the NOC and identified the firmware problem with the switch, 12 engineers were sitting there needing psychiatric care because they changed out all the network hardware and 5 servers under the belief it was a level 1 event. It was a level 1 event.... but all the network hardware had the firmware bug- and there was no patch. So no matter what they did nothing worked.

The solution?

6 8 port Netgear hubs from Best Buy. And flash the switches the next maintenance window with updated firmware.

It was the only time in my life I felt like both a hero and a villain. The applauded me on the way out... and hated me for the bill.

Answer:

There are certain realities having to do with NOC issues, programming, and scaling that I'm sure their team is better suited to handle.

What you are illustrating, as usual, is a propensity to diminish an accurate answer, because as an unskilled neophyte you are of course qualified to make comment. (which BTW you are not).

So why not leave it at "We're not happy the servers are down". I'm not happy about it.

But at the same time, I know what those guys in the NOC are going through. And I've worked on systems of this scale.

If we are so bad.... why don't you assimilate a PHD every 18 months, hit the data center, and do it better?

Because you probably, respectfully, don't have what it takes.

Glad to see i'm not the only one with not enough hands and fingers to fly and fight at the same time!

Are you serious? Did your parents drop you on your head a lot as a kid? Those of us who have worked in IT know stuff goes wrong and that screaming "FIX IT!!!11111" doesn't fix it any faster.

Maybe I should go throw a tantrum at mechanical engineers that explain the laws of physics that lead to engine failure because my car blew a head gasket recently. I mean I am sure that will magically make my car work and never fail again.

I know software can be mathematically proven to work. I also know this costs such a ridiculous amount of money that only software like that which controls the space shuttle has that level of analysis done. And they still had bugs in that.

Pay peanuts, expect perfection and cry when it isn't delivered.
