# 1 Scanning, what is the point?
02-05-2010, 08:41 PM
Ok, I scan and I get some vague message about there being something
out there.

Well I already know that, I want to know where that something IS!

So tell me, what is the point of scanning, if you can't pinpoint what
you're scanning for?

Is there some skill I'm missing? Does sensor equipment improve
scanning? Because I've tried that route and nada.

If it does nothing and I'm open minded about being wrong, what is
the point of it. At the moment all it does is frustrate.

I need to know where the stoopid dilithium rock is, not that it's out
there somewhere. I already know that!... Lol

See that blue circle spinning around you and then stopping to point a beam of light in some random direction?

Yeah, follow that.

It also points you to objectives on the ground even if there are no anomalies. If you could not see that light maybe your graphics are not up to the challenge.

Great, so why isn't that pinpointed on the map?

Not some vague directional arrow.

It's a scan ffs, it should come up on the map.
Dependent on skills or equipment.

because this is a game and if it tells you exactly where to go there's zero interest in finding it, merely "collecting" things.

It's the difference between hide and seek and "get your sister for me. she's in her room"

that being said, GLOWIES should be on the map after a certain time limit. Like...if you haven't found a glowie in, say, 5 minutes of looking, it should appear.

I cannot STAND 20 minute glowie hunts. They are required to find. Anomolies are not.

When open beta hit, the scan would just let you know that there was something out there you just had to go find it. One of the major fixes to the game brought about the direction pointing animation. This animation will not point out just annomolies but quest objectives and has at least for me turned into an invaluable tool. Preset key bind of V on the keyboard. Pretty much eliminates any need for addons like questhelper.

"Captain, i'm picking up something on the tri-corder East of our position"

not

"Captain, i'm picking up something on the tri-corder 187x546y on the mini-map"

I wish they'd change the color of the beam. There are some base ground missions where it matches the decor.

It's really quite ingenious. It gives you a line to follow to nearly any interactiable object. That's right! Mission objectives can be found with the scan function too.
