Engineering team shares an internal Cooldown with all other team abilities.. most importantly science team. It won't always be up, and if you likely will toss it to a team member who needs it, not yourself.. and in higher tier pvp, target switches occur often. Getting caught with your shields down even for a second when an opposing team switches to you, and all of the sudden you have fire from 5 individuals incoming, helps quite a bit with the burst.
Once they allow respecs I'll likely be switching out of phasers, but that doesn't change the fact that its a very strong option for pvp so long as you can get your hands on the dual heavies.
I'm torn on a personal favorite; lately I've been using Phasers, and it's nice that they can occasionally knock shields offline for a few seconds. However, it's hard to notice the full benefits - if an enemy ship slows down briefly, you generally can't tell if it's from a random engine hit or from them simply reducing their speed or changing power levels.
Actually you now can tell if it's due to your phaser hit. There is a debuff icon displayed under your target frame.
Phasers are kinda useless in pvp, as everyone is running engineering team, wich kinda nullifies the effect.
Not really..i guess you havent used Phasers in High lvl pvp? judging by your argument ANY energy type could be nullified but this is where a good player comes in...
I personally use all Phased Polaron beam arrays on my Fleet Escort. and although i almost always do most damage and get most kills in PVP i specialize in 1v1 pvp. I use 4X mk XII rare Polaron Phases to make my beams nice and hot and i also run 3x mk XII Rare EPS flow regs to maintain a 125% wep power even after my 2x BO3's..i wont go into detail on how exactly my build is setup since its my little secret (PM me in game ill show you in a sparring match "DnaAngel@DnaAngel") but my Achilles Heal is to go up against a Engi officer that focuses on tanking..but this is where BO skills come in to play and keeping the right rotation to counter as many effects as possible all while keeping your DPS high. which in my case is averaging 2800 dmg per beam and critting 35k+ per BO3( i can pop off a BO3 every 12-15 secs). i also run no hull heals nor hull plating. I usually kill a player in less then 1 min average and only die 1-2 times in STF Elites.
Alot of players swear by Anti-Proton wepaons but i think alot of that steams from the mentality that they do the most dmg and/or bc a player has to be Admiral to use them. But in my exp they only have a 2.5% chance to proc and if im not mistaken the AP proc ignores shields? so u got a 2.5% chance to ignore shields in one hit..that dosent really help your other weapons esp Torps if their shields are still up. you need something to cut down shields ASAP thats the key to success in my EXP. the best energy's to use IMO in any situation would be Phaser/Tetryon..polars proc isnt bad and im running phased polars only due to fact they are supposed to punch thru the strongest of shields ( which seems to be a true statement thus far) but i think what alot of people esp the younger crowd forget is all energy types do the same dmg, the only difference between them is the procs. and its pretty pointless to mix energys, i dont think i really need to explain why..
GOing back to your original statement Dalnar.. engi team wont keep up to a escort running all Phaser beams with Acc X3 or Tetryon beams ACC X3..alot of my problems with going against tanks is my Phased Polars have no ACC buffs. but with my rotation i can nullify thier healing long enough to kill them. but of course no ones perfect and a slight error or misclick and be the difference between being victorious or blowing up in a rage of denial (esp after talking smack and starting the fight)
