things like torpedo hits and such can adversely affect your crew rating. As you lose crew your BOff skill effectiveness diminishes- because there are less people who actually do the work available to do it at optimal efficiency. On the bigger ships replenishing crew can take a substantial amount of time.

Except it doesn't have to be associated with your ship blowing up. It can happen in a messy fight you live through and affect you until your crew recovers.

These are also reasons why the science ships have fewer crew.

a) don't draw threat or you won't be able to do your job of -

b) get those shields back up on the cruiser getting the tribble beat out of it. Who cares how much damage your phasers are doing as long as you aren't getting shot (the cruiser is) and that little escort ship is slipping in behind them for an overcharged quantum torpedo strike.

Fewer crew means when we do draw threat and lose some, we come back up to full capacity faster, and our skills are at full power quicker, letting us fulfill our role in a -real- fleet, not just a messy GO KILL engagement like we have now.

I haven't seen it yet, but I guarantee you, at some point you're going to see a PvE Romulan war bird almost dead, then "WTF? its shields are back to full?? Crap....a Romulan science ship."
