# 1 A Tiny Little Conundrum
02-06-2010, 07:11 AM
Hey there, everyone!!

I'm doing well with my STO Main (a Human Male Starfleet Tactical Officer) and am looking forward to getting him a Vigilant-Class Tactical Escort.

However, I'm also working on designing a couple of Alts--I won't start them until my Main gets his Vigilant, but I eventually want to: A) try a different path in Starfleet, see what commanding a Science Vessel or Cruiser would be like, and B) see what life is like on the Klingon Side of the game.

Now, the only thing I need to work on for the Klingon Alt is his Physical Appearance, so I'm good there. However, I'm facing a bit of a conundrum with my Starfleet Alt (a Human Female).

Basically, my Starfleet Alt is going to be a member of Starfleet Research and Development, and her ship is going to be a Mobile Technology Lab. However, my problem is deciding what Career Spec and Ship Type to give her.

So, I'm asking everyone out there: Would a Technology Lover in R&D like my Starfleet Alt be better as a Science Officer or as an Engineer? Also, would a Science Vessel or a Cruiser function better as a Mobile Technology Lab?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Three words.

Captain Beverly Picard.

Science officer, science ship.

Do it.

DO IT.

I decided to actually get Shion (My Starfleet Alt) started, and I made her an Engineer. I think it makes sense--Research & Development would probably be a Technology-Oriented branch of the Starfleet Corp. of Engineers, after all.

However, I'm still trying to decide what type of ship to use for her. Cruisers and Science Vessel have their individual strengths, and I can't choose between them. So, I'm going to have to focus on the RP Issue. So, my latest question is: Which ship type (Cruiser or Science Vessel) would be easier to convert into a Mobile Technology Lab?

Well, if the dilemma now is choosing between a cruiser and a science vessel, I'd vote science vessel.

I command an escort on my main, but I have to say, I absolutely can't stand cruisers. They're slow, plodding, and can't begin to match the firepower of an escort... and in my experience, they're not THAT much more resilient than an escort or a science vessel.

Higher tier science vessels have similar turn rates to escorts, making them much more maneuverable than clunky cruisers, and they're second to none in their ability to buff and debuff, meaning you can get the same firepower out of them with the right combination of buffs (and debuffs) as you can from an escort.

As for the RP angle, I'd say a science ship makes more sense for a mobile technology lab. Put it this way. Cruisers are used as ships-of-the-line and long-range exploration vessels, because they're resilient and self-sufficient. Escorts are used as fast attack and close fire support vessels, because while they're not designed for deep space missions, they're powerful, fast, and hard to defend against. Science ships are used as fleet support, hospital, and research vessels (and in some cases for long-range exploration) because they're just as self-sufficient as cruisers, but actually have the facilities for medical and scientific missions. Of those three, which sounds like the easiest to reconcile as a technology lab? Science vessel, hands down.

So while I don't think your choice of engineering officer is the best, I do still think you should go for a science vessel instead of a cruiser, for both RP and practical purposes.

In terms of visual styling for 2nd tier ships; Nova/its counterpart styles look far far more sleek and 'techy' than the Connie/Vesper/Excalibur or /Sabre/Rapier/Ushaan.

I am playing as a Engineer officer on a science vessel, it works out quite well.

on the rp side of things my toon's back story is quite similar. and science seemed the most logical for "R&D"

think of it this way, if you are doing research and development then you would be doing experiments that you will want sophisticated sensors for, science vessels would have the sensors you need/want.

a cruiser would more be for utilizing already developed technology. call it a "mobile machine shop" of sorts.

I hear what you're both saying.

@SaintHazard: I originally was thinking Science Officer for Shion, but I felt that giving Shion tech-related skills (like Turret Fabrication, etc.) would be better for her RP-Wise, which is why I went Engineer. And I'm glad for your opinion--I think I will go Science Vessel.

@Jonathan_Kent: Visual Styling does work, and I do think that the Nova design does scream "Techie" to me.

Now, one last decision to make. I'm not going to go all the way to a T5 Ship--I don't see the point of going for a Luna or Destiny-Class Vessel (heck, my STO Main [Human Male Starfleet Tactical Officer] is only going to go T4 in his chosen Class [Escort--I really want to use a Vigilant]). However, I also don't want to leave her with a Nova, either.

So, do I go with a T3 Olympic or a T4 Discovery for Shion?
