I"ve mentioned this in a couple of threads that had related material but thought WTH, why not give it it's own thread and see what people had to say specifically on this topic. Below are a few things that I think Player controlled space stations could provide. It's not comprehensive, and I hope other people add their own ideas, or even expand on some of mine.

Player Controlled Space Stations - This would be where I spent a large portion of my time.
This would give us a different level of RPability including but not limited to:
  • Ability to set up Localized Personal Economies - IE: Black Markets
We all know that they exist. Whether it's selling things on offsite locations or at the exchange, this would be a way to allow people to swap equipment from red/blue side.
  • Ability to encourage RP and IC socializing - It's what Quark's Bar was for after all.
  • Ability for "Defend the Station/Local Planet/Local Anomaly Missions - It's why DS9 was "Administrated" by Starfleet initially.
  • Ability to allow Cross Faction Interaction - Much like Pocket D in CoX but player run with options for what is or is not allowed.
  • Ability for PCs to Charge Credits for Various services on their station - Sisko raising Quark's rent for example, or charging a small "docking and service fee" etc.
  • Used Shipyard - To sell your ships to other players who can't get them yet, maybe with lower performance specs cause they are "used".
This would essentially be the equivalent of taking the military grade specs off the ship and leaving it up to the player to upgrade it to their needs.
This would allow lower rank people to have higher rank ships with believable drawbacks.
  • Black Market Ship Customization - This would be one way/place for a player to upgrade the ship that they just bought at the used shipyard.
Might be a good place to put back /powerhues, but with drawbacks for using a chop-shop to upgrade your ship.
If Cryptic decides to limit weapons to the faction that they belong to (Disruptors to Klingons, Phasers to Feds, etc) this would be an IG way to justify having an alternate set of equipment. . .even if it did work a little less efficiently because it's black market gear.
  • Gambling - This could be anything from an integrated Casino to just private poker games in backrooms. Let's face it, we all want to take the chance of getting more credits to use at the used shipyard!
Again, there could be more stuff. . .but player controlled space stations would be a great addition.

I've never played Eve. So I honestly don't know anything about it except that it's set in space. However, individuals having control of their own stations has happened in many SCIFI franchises.

Doesn't seem like the game for that. There's already going to be a million Admirals walking around

Hmm, i'll say i like this idea, but only if you support mine http://forums.startrekonline.com/sho...d.php?t=110352

Lol, joking.

I like this idea indeed, since many of us like Captain Sisko better than the others, and would add a nice setting for several episodes. The problem is that space is limited in STO, so where would player stations be located?

Ignore it. That is called "troll". Its purpose is to make people angry. They are thirsty for attention.

Don't give it any.

Good question. If it were left up to me. . .I'd say put them in or near (just outside the system jumpoff point) other systems. Example

Maria, the player of Sec'el, wants a station near her characters home planet. A station is set up just outside of the Vulcan system. Or as a location in the system but away from the planet.

Depending on race/faction/location they can use any of the currently accessible station maps as the base and allow for some (relatively) minor customization. Alternately, they could let a player build their own map based on a series of options.

Example is that a friend of mine and I have a pair of characters that we portray at conventions we go to. These characetrs are "Interdimensional Businessmen". Their station is built using a collection of parts scavenged from The WOLF 359 Incedent. The Main portion of the station are two Galaxy Class Saucers that have been attached to each other. It's all RP and such, but it makes for fun IC storytelling when we're drunk at cons and it changes everytime

There are options that could make it work, it's a matter of if we can get Cryptic to go for it.

LOL you trekkers actually drink in cons? Hehe.. thought that alcohol made you sick :p

Anyway, back on topic. I thought on that as well, but the problem is indeed game immersion. I don't think that the federation actually would put several stations in the same sector, let alone so near each other like near Systems. And if they would, why would I, as a KDF commander, feel inclined to assault it? I'd have one klingon captured station surrounded by federation bases.

I think that the thing is to have actual map-based purposes for the player to create stations, and not only territory. We could have a seamless deep-space map with unlimited "systems", and each system would have things like minerals, wormholes to places deep into enemy territory and the like. I am thinking on other ideas, but this is the only thing i can think of right now, since i actually do play EVE for years
