Hey gang,

I remember that the Dev's had a thread about combat difficulty in the OB, but I guess it is archived now. They were asking for opinions there, so I will them mine here.

First off let me say that I do really like STO. That said, I have noticed that combat seems to be too easy now. Here is my case:

First off, this happened tonight. I am LT Cmdr 1 and I have a Nova class Sci Vessel. I have mostly Mk II gear, but I do have forward mounted MK IV dual phaser arrays. I run Mk Photon Torps front and back. I also have a standard MK II Phaser Array in the rear on auto fire.

Normally I can run with my total power to weapons and not have too much problem. It takes occasional turning and some of my BO skills to keep healthy, but as long as I don't hit +9 stuff I am fine.

Tonight I was in battle with 3 Orion Corvettes. I was just starting on them, when my wife called me with a low blood sugar problem. I had to go right away, so I just left things going. (I do think I switch to all sheilds, but may have left it at all weapons.) I figured I would just respawn when I returned.

So when I got back maybe 5 minutes later, I found I was still plenty alive. There were now only two corvettes and also now 2 or 3 Orion fighters. My shields did not even show much damage. I picked a new target and went to check on the wife again.

I cam back and there was only one Orion Corvette plus the fighters. I finished them off and completed the mission.

So, I think combat is still at the silly easy level. My shield never lost more than a small amount even when I was not at the computer and was attacked by three or more ships.

I just thought I would share that with the Devs.

Thanks,
Duncan

Now keep in mind I play an escort class, but wait a little untill you get to Commander. The enemy ships at commander level not only put up a better defense and offense nut also use more special abilities such as tractor, boarding parties, system attacks, and evasive manuevers. Im still doing well against single mobs, but if I lose attention for a moment I usually find myself in a real pickle with no shields no engines and in a tractor. Also dont even think about grabing multiple mobs cuz you'll feel the burn in no time. Like I said Im an escort class so Im a little fragile, but the new enemy abilities really livens things up.

HA HAHA! You won't be singin' that tune when you run into some Hirogen Escorts. I distinctly remember complaining to a friend of mine on vent about how easy the game was and saying "look a single ship to fight on a patrol mission, watch me one shot it" Not only did my high yield 3 quantums and rapid fire cannons hurt little more than its feelings but he had my shields down and a torpedo in my hull before I knew what was going on.

I still won of course, once I realized I had to treat that little tyke like I'd treat a klingon battleship, rather than a frigate, but still.

My only real problem is that when i team up with some friends, it gets to easy, Its me in a science ship and then a Escort and Cruiser, and we can just burn through without even doing anything hehe, maybe we are op? or maybe the space combat needs ramped up more for grouping. In early open beta they had the difficulty lvl for space just right imho.

Edit: Just hit Commander 2 so maybe it will be a bit better in the commander tier, but in LT-C tier is when Grouping seemed to easy to me.

See, I remember in Closed Beta that the Devs said that combat started to ramp up at LT. Cmdr level. If I can walk away from the computer and defeat enemies, than I still think that is a bit too easy, no matter what rank you are. I look forward to Commander, but it will be awhile for me. I play slow.

Thanks,

I wish players would experience the game more before demanding for nerfs. The fighting gets more exciting as you progress through the ranks.

That's just a lie, I'm a captain was in close beta and am now in retail it's the same repetitive easy game play as Lt cmdr there is nothing new and still no challenge.

I suggest most of you need to get at least to the captian tier, then get into some 4-5 man groups in the exploration zones, before you complain about difficulty. While this game may be easy to solo and in my opinion it is all the way to 45, grouping with more than 4 people ups the difficulty quite a bit.

I don't think you should get to level XXXXX before you actually get into even remotely challenging battles. At most, I'd say level 5 for noobness.
When I started and complained it was too easy, people said 'wait till level 11, 1-10 is supposed to be easy'. I said 'Fine'...
When I was level 11 and complained it was too easy, people said 'wait till level 15, romulans will kick your....'. I said 'Fine' ...
When I was level 15 and complained it was too easy, people said 'wait till 20, Heionus (or whatever) will kick your ...'. I said 'Fine' ...
Now I'm 26, I can beat all Heionus, Romulans, Klingons, Orions, Gorns, and other bad dudes they send, almost on autofire (might have to click an ability here and there) and the hull never going below 90%, most of the fights in fact never take my hull below 98%, and I still say, it is way too easy. Not only space combat, but ground combat as well. I was watching a fight I had last night... none of the BOs or myself had their health reduced one bit, and only one member had her shield reduced like 20% during the fight, all the other members (and me) had full shield all the time. It's ridiculous!

A game should not be super easy for the first 20 levels or the first 20 hours of play. Regardless of the difficulty level at high ranks the game is clearly too easy at the lieutenant levels. This is a completely valid concern independent of how well the game is balanced at the Captain level.
