Remember it's possible for the game to be both too hard and too easy. If one person is using a brokenly good set of weapons with a brokenly good set of equipment combined with a brokenly good BO loadout then the game will be a breeze. But then somebody else might have accidentally picked something that really really sucks and for them the game is too hard because their weapons do nothing and their shields get one shotted.

Can we at least agree that, if you set your standard configuration ship in autofire you shouldn't be able to beat any fights? Because right now you can.

That depends a lot on your level and your equipment.

If I'm using the Miranda from 1-10, the difference between autofire and paying attention is one weapon slot. You have three ensign-level BOs and therefore a maximum of three skills to use. The enemy ships are in a similar position; all you can do really is orbit each other and fire your two phasers.

Believe me, it gets harder. The difficulty in the game is largely a result of the fact that enemy ships advance in the same way (more weapon slots, more and better BOff skills, better weapon types, etc) that you do, so as you get stronger and more flexible so do they. In the aggregate, I've found that the game continues to get harder as I progress through Captain into Admiral.

Nor should it be super easy for the first 45 levels and 0-??? hours of play.

The game gets incrementally harder as I advance through zones. But overall it's far too breezy and swishy for my tastes. Even the big opponents are of passing concern. I long for some drawn-out Kirk-v-Khan tactical fistfights, which I haven't experienced from this game in a while.

I am a big fan of consistent challenge throughout your career. Otherwise your career will flash by and leave you empty and alone..

There is no endgame content as yet (some is coming soon).
Leveling does not require a high level of skill by any stretch of the imagination.
Missions are easier to solo.

I have not made it to admiral post beta but there is certainly no massive difficulty curve that I have detected through captain. The enemy gains abilities and uses them at the same rate as you? That is not a "big difficulty increase". That maintains a status-quo as long as you know your own abilities and use them well. In almost every case I now have to intentionally do something very stupid to get the adrenaline-pumping danger like the Hirogen Battleship, Gorn Battleship, or D7s with the Warvig was in beta before their skilled bridge officers were shown the airlock. It was stated that it was a problem for those ships to have skills like High Yield 3 when the player did not have access to the skills yet.. but that difficulty is what made the encounter stand out for me. There should be enemies that go up like match-sticks and others that I must run away from. It keeps the combat experience from becoming bland.

I understand that there just isn't the amount of content at release to allow for missions that some players would need to avoid due to their high difficulty. I don't want to sound like an elitist snob with incredible skills - I am hardly some tactical genius or keyboard virtuoso - I just sometimes enjoy more difficult opponents. The current schema is too predictable. Please work on a difficulty range slider that would allow for encountering a wider range of tiered-up and down enemies and skills within each mission. It would be great to mix it up to give the Star Trek exploration experience of encountering friends and enemies both much stronger and weaker than yourself..

I have to agree it's too easy at least at T1 and T2 so far. I AFK killed an even level raptor the other day with autofire.

Maybe the problem isn't that the game is to easy its that your Science ship is too powerful and needs to be nerfed. I can assure you that I can't walk away from the computer with three equal level ships shooting at me and have my Escort be there when I get back.

# 19 Update
02-13-2010, 06:50 AM
Hey Gang,

Just an update. last night i was in the Gorn Fleet action. LT Cmdr 1, Nove Science vessel. I died once against 2 Battleships and 4 cruisiers. And that was when I was playing. I had to do AFK to read to my son for bed and when I came back, I was still allive. And I was in the Asteriods where the cruisers and battleships spawn. I don;t think I killed anything while I was gone however...

There were probably a couple of times I might have died (I got ganked by spawning groups) but the timely arrival of my team saved my rear.

I still maintain that space combat is a bit too easy. I am not saying I want a return to alpha strikes and the dificulty levels in the early open beta, but something needs to be adjusted I think.

(And the Klingon PvE in the Kahless Expanse is a total cake walk at Lt Cmd 1. Admitedly everything was -4 or so, but still...)

Thanks,
Duncan
