There are lots of ways which would work....

A. Make it (much) shorter, like 5-6 seconds long
B. Make it only disable weapons, so defensive powers can still be used
C. Allow the player to turn and change shield facings

I'm sure there are plenty more, but that's what I thought of off the top of my head.
