It's their ship, and last time I looked it's a free country, let them name their ship the way they want to.

Hey now, no need to be rude like that. It's not up to you to judge.

This is a bit off-topic, but I'd like to point out that "U.S.S. Galactica" or "U.S.S. Odyssey" are perfectly viable canon names.

For the former, either you forget that 400 years ago humans made a TV show and that this ship's name is a tribute to it; or you simply agree that "Galactica" means nothing more than "a galactic thing". Sure, "galaxy" is Starfleet's original wording of the idea, but things change.

The latter, U.S.S. Odyssey, is "(NCC-71832) was a Galaxy-class Federation starship that was in service during the latter half of the 24th century [destroyed in 2370]." (source: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/USS_Odyssey)

So while I'm all for respect of the IP, in any game, I think one should not ask too much. The explanation provided here by many for their "named-X" ship is not only relevant, it's testimony that the game has restrictions that roleplayers need to circumvent in order to live their fantasy.

On a side note:
- ship prefixes shouldn't be so free. they should add some form of restriction. Per year for instance, 94001 to 194001 the first year of STO, then 194001 to 294001 in 2011 and so on. Or force a prefix like it's done in reality (chronologically). I'd prefer that. You could then choose to keep a prefix, if and only if you keep the name associated to it, and the game would thus force a "-A" at the end of that prefix, then "-B" etc, based on your account. There'd be several ships with the same name but different prefixes, but seen from one's account, it could serve collecting a line of ships.
- Names should be typographically restricted/forced: First letter of each word always in capital; words could only be separated by a space, a dot or a dash; numbers forbidden, etc. The same goes for players names actually in my book.

But please... USS Galactica or USS Babylon are perfectly fine by ST canon standards. It's not because these may refer to 20th century fiction that they cannot be ship names in the 25th century, on the contrary. The very (and formerly controversial) existence of the "U.S.S. Akira" further proves that point. You cannot begin to compare USS Galactica with USS FixTehBugs.

Just my geek's 2 cts.

He's right though. And he has every right to judge whatever he damn well pleases.

People are namign their ships WRONG, simple as that.

Why is it wrong?

Not because we don't like it, but because it is WRONG.

They are trying to conform to a naming convention. That sets out certain rules for naming. If you try to adhere to a naming convention and do not follow those rules, you're not following the convention.

Therefore.

Anyone with -X on the end of their shipname is doing it WRONG. It breaks immersion slightly, and looks stupid to boot.

Seriously. It's not easy to work out.

It's WRONG. CHANGE IT.

Good day.

I didn't notice. But I mis-typed a name and now I cannot change it. Is there a cooldown on name changes?
