Question for anyone that cares to answer

Me and my wife are starting the game on Saturday (bought it on release date but she's out of town and won't let me play ) She is going to make a tac officer and I was wondering what I should make (engineer/science)
From what I have been reading. Cruisers make more of a dedicated healer and science can heal and/or Debuff?
We plan on going to the leveling grind and MAYBE do a little PvP on the way.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

P.S - Any suggestion that took place in the series/movies are valid suggestions as well. Canon is fun

Theres a bit more involved then class. It depends on factors such as which ship class you both wish to fly, what you set your bridge officers up with, etc. Any career decided, can in fact fly any ship. So there is no clear cut answer.

However, a few friends and I have tried tac/escort with eng/cruiser for support and it does seem to shine in PvE. PvP is a whole other monster that I'll leave to someone a bit more experienced to explain. Tac/Escorts deal a ton of dmg, are squishy as a wet paper sack and tend to **** off the aliens fast. With a Engineer friend with a good setup, for extending shields, repairing hull, etc... it makes things a lot easier.

Don't forget, a tac/escort isnt just about offense. You can set up your officers with a few skills that can ease the pain, quite a bit.

Good luck to you and your wife. Hope you both enjoy many hours of gameplay in STO.

Since you two are doing it together, I would recommend science and tactical, with science and escorts for ships. That way you have one damage dealer, with a support vessel for keeping the damage dealer in the fight.

Thanks for the responses

Since we will only be playing these characters together I was going to set all of my bridge officers to support roles (minus my tac officer, need to put out a little DPS) And she was going to train all of her officers into offensive roles. Science would be fun from what I have read, but is a cruiser viable for a pure support role? healing and throwing out some DPS?

Cruisers can support other ships to some degree. I think you can send engineering teams to ally ships to heal damage to their hull. You can extend your shields around your allies, protecting them from fire.

Science can send over science teams which help repair shields. They can also transfer shield power to allies, allowing them to fight longer. They also have some nice abilities like one that scrambles the enemies sensors, making them fire at each other.

I enjoy my science class quite a bit, though I haven't had as much time to play with my cruiser.

Well it depends, lemme show a few options since your wife will be escort.

First off, career choice.

http://sto-intel.org/wiki/Player_Leveled_Abilities

Engineer: A tanker, he has the space skills to absorb and heal more dmg and skills to lower energy consumption of beams. Also a power lvl boost buff (can be used on you or another) and miracle worker, a hull heal. So yeah, a tanker/support.

Science: A debuffer, he has the debuff skills in space Sensor scan. Dampening field to let you and nearby friendlies to absorb more dmg and photonic fleet for more dps or emergencies.

Ships: (ill leave out escort, seems dull and non-social to team with your wife in the same class)

Cruiser: Given the skillsets and the bridgeofficers, this ship is purely support. He has the best heals for others, namely Extend Shields. Other then that, its a slow turning 360' beam platform which does more dps and has far more hull hp then a science ship does. Id advise to take the engineering career with this ship.

Science: tricks and treats thats his game. Jam/scramble/tractor, you decide how and what happens, but you have the 'worst' dps and the highest shield tank. This ship is pure support and if specced right in terms of BO skills, it can heal other ships fine as well. Fighting style would be like operating like a surgeon, no need to blast a gaping hole to stop a heart beating, this ship makes incisions and strikes where it hurts the most. Id take the pure setup with this one, science career and science ship works the best imo.

So its up to you, big bad beam support platform with hefty healing abilities and tank OR debuffer, judge and jury of your victim.

Oh, i forgot to add, since others were mentioning it. All team abilities are BO abilities which can be used either on you or a friend. This goes for: Engineering Team (hull heal), Science Team (shield heal) and Tactical Team (DPS buff).

But 'heals' from a cruiser of science ship will differ alot.
Cruiser has the high engi BOs to take up extend shield III, which is pure awesomeness and science ship does not. However Science ship can use the Transfer Shield Strenght, which relies on AUX power lvl, which is why this ability is more suited for science ships and their innate higher aux lvl.
So either way, you will be able to heal/support your wife. Its just a matter of choosing the correct skillset for your BOs.

Thanks for the link.

I think a cruiser will support my playstyle more. Go in guns blazing next to her and just slap everything I have on the ship that's getting hurt lol. And......I get to fly a sovergn(spelling) class. Thanks for the support

Now do I want to be a black guy with a visor? Or a ****ed off Irishman?

Class is not really a restriction , what skills you take on your BO's are though along with ship you plan on flying.
