Strategy 1 - Run
Strategy 2 - Kill Everything

To understand this encounter you need to learn the following information.

Crystalline Fragments and Large Crystalline Fragments are like Heavy Plasma Photon Torpedoes. They chase a players ship until they collide and deal damage. Unlike Torpedo's however, they ignore shields. That is all the offensive power the Crystalline Entity has.

Large Crystalline Fragments will split into Small Crystalline Fragments. It is important to understand two things about this behavior. First, they will not break into Small Crystalline Fragments if shot down so you can prevent this. Secondly, they only split into Small Crystalline Fragments if they hit a ship.

Small Crystalline Fragments spawn when a Large Crystalline Fragment hits a ship, and once spawned will fly straight for the Crystalline Entity. Once they hit the Crystalline Entity they will heal it for 1% of its health.

So now that you know everything there is to know about the encounter lets go over Strategy 1 and Strategy 2.

Strategy 1 - Run
If you can outrun the large shards they cannot break into small shards and they cannot heal the entity. Out running Crystalline Fragments themselves doesn't help the fight at all but it will prevent you from getting blown up. So basically, the only important thing is to not get hit by large shards, and if you get hit by anything else too bad. Mines are very bad. With this strategy you can have all 20 players in the instance dealing damage to the Crystalline Entity.

Strategy 2 - Fight
Kill everything. In this strategy you prevent all DPS by simply eliminating all Large Crystalline Fragments and Crystalline Fragments. With all offense eliminated no one will ever blow up and you will be able to maintain steady DPS on the Crystalline Entity. One or Two Primary's should be designated to stay in one spot and DPS the Crystalline Entity, everyone else should be close by those two people. As those two people draw crystalline fragments to them, the other 18 should be shooting those fragments down. In this strategy you not only prevent any offense by the Crystalline entity, but you will also prevent all healing. By shooting down all Large Crystalline Fragments, you will prevent them from ever breaking into Small Crystalline Fragments which would allow the Crystalline Entity to heal. In the event that a lucky Large Crystalline Fragment did hit a player, 18 people shooting down the small fragments would also help prevent healing. In this manor with no dps being dealt, and no healing being given to the Entity, one or two primary DPS'ers on the Crystalline entity will eventually destroy it.

Whichever method you choose, make sure you direct everyone to this thread and tell them to read up on either Strat 1 or Strat 2. Also, my personal recommendation is to use Strat 2 unless you have some very skilled captains in your fleet. Yes it takes longer, but it is a lot easier for noobs.

Nice guide that I hope people pay attention to, but:

This bit isn't quite true. The entity does have some sort of beam attack, but it only seems to fire it at the main aggro target and doesn't hit for much.

Very nice. Unfortunately it could be stickied here, be a huge window that comes up when you enter the zone the CE's in, put it on billboards around the world, tattoo it on everyone's foreheads, and you'll still have people messing it all up.

More simply :

Put all power into the Engines. Makes you go fast. Out run the shards.

Fly in circle around Entity. Avoid shards, you're going fast with full power to engines so it shouldnt be a problem.

Focus all your fire on the entity.

Thats it. Simple. Works.

Now in the other thread, it was mentioned that if a small fragment impacts with a ship, the entity is healed. You're saying the only way the entity is healed is if the small shards make it back to the entity.

If that is 100% confirmed, then shooting any shard, especially having some specifically clean up small shards, would be a good idea.

I'm pretty sure that it's outright stated in the mission file in the instance that this is the case.

Either way, if you watch closely, the small shards fly back to the entity, not towards players.

CONFIRMED:

Scramble Sensors directly on the CE will stop all fragments except smalls from moving or detonating from proximity.
