The game is desirable for people without a ton of money. It seems it's not desirable to you. There's a difference.

And please, don't start with the 'I pay for this, I should get everything my way' spiel. If Cryptic limits the charslots to 2-3, then that's what you pay for. You're not getting less then you pay for unfairly, you're getting less then you'd like. There's that difference again. Working as intended.

That said, yes, more slots would be nice eventually. But if not, I'll enjoy my game with three characters till I tire of it and move on.

It's a shame they don't use an Enterprise-level relational database such as MS SQL Server or Oracle to manage that data. It would go a long way of reducing that complexity if they are currently using a home-grown database. Since Eve's SQL Server can handle all the transaction and storage data in that game, Cryptic should really consider using a similar relational database in their games. Now if they are using an Enterprise-level database to manage transactions and storage, then I must shake my head because the interface between the game and database engines is poor and they need to devote some resources to improving it.

You need to speak to jackalope if you think you know more than their server techs in boston. Or their developers in california. I'm sure, if you can come up with a cost effective way to develop the game and make it run brilliantly he'd hire you in a heartbeat.

but anyhow, the game initially has 2 character slots.

Once you have 1 character reach lvl 6, a 3rd slot unlocks as well as the Klingon faction.

If you had pre-ordered the game, you had an option to purchase the 1 yr or Lifetime subscription which gave an additional 2 character slots for a total of 5 slots. This required a pre-order key on your account and the subscription purchase before Feb. 1, 2010.
Base: 2 Slots
Annual/Lifetime: +2
Hit Level 6: +1

This is how that person likely has it.

Since hasn't hit level 6 yet, hasn't unlocked his 5th slot.

As for Character Slots.....

If Champions is any indication...

"Additional Character Slots (1200 Cryptic Points per 4 additional slots)"

But then...They start off with 8 character slots available.

Agreed with this. You paid for 3 character slots, that's all. If you want more, you'll have to pay extra for those. I don't see the problem.

Also, I have a hard time sympathizing with someone who wants more than 3 characters in a game this flexible. Once they implement respecs, there's really no reason to ever roll another character unless you really want to play a different race for some reason.

I'm planned on the following

joined trill - tactical
lib borg - engineer
vulcan - science
lib klingon - tactical

I've just recently turned captain with my joined trill and went heavy on escorts and the other 3 I've just created and will play again later. I'm sort of rushing my trill (skimming through text and such) so I've got access to everything and then I'll go back and probably do engineering and heavy on cruisers having learnt from my tactical. character. I'm still treating my trill as a proper character but rather than trial and error, I'm just finding out what I can do, better ways of doing things (like working on explore missions to give me access to better stuff and drag out the gameplay as opposed to a mission only approach and ). I didn't start boosting my BO's until late commander to see what BO's I get later and if they are better (not really just traits which don't stand out that badly) so next time I'll no leave it so late.

I don't know if I'd need more slots really as I only need 1 maxed out character on each side but when other factions are released THEN will be when I'll have to either free up slots of want more slots.

They also stated somewhere that the character data required for STO is more than twice what it is for CO. Probably because you don't have 1 character per slot you actually have many. You have data to be stored about you, your ship, each one of your bridge officers. Each one has inventory to deal with and in the case of you and your BO's you have skill data to keep track of.

So I suspect when they offer addtional slots it won't be for the same prices as CO .

A lot of you seem to be confusing a business decision with a technical limitation.

The game was designed for x amount of slots so that extra slots could be sold later in the c-store. This goes hand in hand with additional races being sold later on too.

If it turns out I need to purchace more slots they can take their game and shove it. I like star trek a lot and I like what I played so far but paying to play and then paying to play more on top of that is not good business. tharts called screwing the customer to make a buck. They need to make the game sesireable for people without a ton of money or they will fail.
Yeah bye..
