Do you sit there and mash the 1 key?
Do you expose/exploit?
Do you let your bridge officers handle things while you relax?
Do you use all your abilities?
Do you use cover?
Do you use the crouch/aim mechanic?

Please tell me, I'm curious to know what other people do to maximize their damage.

I gave my bridge crew all expose weapons. I have two exploit weapons. Z, G, 2 and I can sometimes vaporize three guys at a time with my split beam guns.

Rooting then setting people on fire with the power of thermal vents (even on space stations or when boarding ships) is quite fun too.

Main thing i do. I tend to put down a turret, a heal thingy, and direct my officers. I'll fire the "1" shot most often. Moving around as needed, but have most officers with expose weapons, and one with an exploit, i'll mostly hit "1", then "G" to target exposed if i don't always notice them, keeping an eye on my second spot to see if it is Xed. If it is, boom! Dead mobs ahoy!

I'm sure i could just sit back and relax, they handle things better than me most of the time, and i'm an aggro magnet for some reason, but i enjoy playing that way and such. (plus, the expose/exploit really makes short work of most of the mobs, even bosses when it happens.)

Edit:

I forgot what weapon it was, but when it would fire on an exposed mob, it would do severe damage to the mobs in the way too. Once took out five in a row, massive damage to the secondariness and vaporized the main.

Crouching can be a mixed blessing. While you're aiming, if your on an escort mission you quite often get someone's big ass filling your screen. If only they'd have set the escort ranges a bit further out.

That's a great tip to know. I wish I had known it sooner. :p

I'm pretty sure it's high density beams that do that.

Yeah, i found out about it from a podcast called STOked, (http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/) and while i tend to get annoyed at some of the random complaining one of the guys does, it had a good ground combat overview.

Just a tad frustrated that i had to find out about something SO handy from a podcast not in game.

You can turn off the crouch camera zoom near the bottom of the controls menu.

Thanks for the replies, I was curious since what I do in combat is round up a group of enemies, spray them with 3 or 4 expose attacks from my full auto assault weapons, then hit them with 6-7 split beam attacks, then swap back to the full autos for another round while I wait for my split beams to come off cooldown.

Edit: I made a post about what I mean.

I send in the redshirts and hang back using expose items. Then exploit.

I loaded all my bots with expose weapons, the Tac with exploit.

I always use Crouch. I usually start with throwing a plasma grenade, then click all my buffs and debuffs and start firing, backing up as I do. My Away Team is pretty good at laying mines, building turrets, building medical things, and throwing smoke grenades and plasma grenades. If there's a Swordmaster or another hard-to-kill character, I'll direct my minions to focus on my target first.

I like the split beam rifle, as I can line up quite a few enemies to do some impressive damage. Positioning is very important in ground combat, and it's a feature that I really enjoy.
