I was reading the ship overview at http://www.startrekonline.com/ship_overview
Under Cruisers it says they have a large cargo bay.

I am only LC4, and my cruiser has no cargo bay other than my device slots. I am wondering if the ship overview is really just flashy talk about the role of cruisers or do you think Cryptic has plans to add this feature?

I think it is old content actually. Once upon a time the ship had a separate cargo space from your inventory. In mid Closed Beta the two were combined. Its a good thing. Managing two different inventory spaces on the fly was a constant pain. One would fill up and you would have to move things in order to loot.. It was really annoying. They consolidated the inventory into one space and created increases based on rank instead of ship/

A buddy in my Fleet last night discovered that if you fill up all your Inventory slots, theres a "OverFlow" Inventory that pops up.

With regard to "cargo bay" capacity, it would make sense if they would increase your personal inventory capacity based on your ship type. Something along the lines of:

D=Default inventory slots for rank
Cruiser = D+4
Science = D+2
Escort = D+0

This would reflect the relative size of the size of the ships. Inventory capacity would still scale with your rank, but would also be affected by ship choice.

As things stand now, it doesn't make much sense that someone in a Defiant class escort can carry the same amount of loot as someone in a Galaxy Class cruiser. If cruisers are truly the largest ships in starfleet, it makes sense that their captains should be able to carry more items at the expense of speed and maneuverabilty. Conversely, someone who chooses a small escort has great speed and maneuverability, but probably shouldn't be able to carry as much cargo around as someone in a larger ship.

That would make sense if items in our inventory had any mass/size relations to each other. Does it make sense that one gun takes up the same inventory slot size as a quantum torpedo launcher? Since items in the slots have no relative size/mass comparision, I don't advocate arbitrarily giving science vessels or cruisers more inventory slots than escorts.

As you increase in rank, your inventory slot count goes up. That helps with the limited inventory slot count.

Slight immersion breaker there - how would you implement that for ground missions? Or, are you saying you'd be carrying your ship's cargo bay around wiht you?

The original idea of two separate bays, one only accessible on the ship, was decent - I guess the implementation left a lot to be desired.

The problem though is one of the "advantages" of cruisers is a large cargo bay, should we take away a bonus from escorts and science vessels to even things out then? I'm not really disagreeing with you but if your going to take away a supposed advantage should it not be replaced with something else to maintain a balance? Whats worse is that if this 'advantage' was removed during closed beta, why is it still listed on the main website now that the game has gone retail? It is confusing at the least, though I suppose they wanted to make sure all the ships had the same number of advantages listed, though for cruisers they list one twice (more power) and one doesn't apply anymore.

Cruisers do still essentially have more "cargo storage" in that they can equip more devices. So the original implementation may have been removed, but there is still an existing rationalization for that description.

If they want to rationalize it they need to remove this line:
"Out of combat, these ships' massive cargo holds and crew make them invaluable when it comes to transporting cargo or colonists, and re-supplying planets, space stations or other ships."

This has nothing to do with devices. Plus it should be labeled as extra device space or something, being able to carry 2 more batteries when you can literally fill your inventory up with 40+ of them hardly counts as "large".
