# 1 Holidays and STO
02-16-2010, 06:07 AM
Every other MMO does it, should STO do it too?

Example. My brother plays World of ********. And when he and the rest of the players are trolling around in a city or something, there are little stupid hearts haning above their heads.

A long time ago (earth and beyond era) they gave out a free item during holloween. a pumpkin chunker.

Opinions?

Didn't Data celebrate Diwali aboard the Enterprise D?

There are precedents.

The only complication is that games like WoW and SWG created fictional holidays based on their universes which were far removed from ours (What a coincidence! Life Day is celebrated during Christmastime!). Star Trek is set hundreds of years in our future. They probably couldn't promote a specific religious or even national holiday, so it would probably have to be stuff like the date of Zephram Cochrane's first flight, the birth of the Federation, birthdays of characters, etc.

Depends on the franchise.

I don't recall many references to Earth holidays being celebrated often.

Trek, with all it's religious storylines...seems to not touch on many holidays very often. A lot of them are just mentioned in passing....

But since there are references to holidays...I wouldn't be surprised they showed up.

Bajor

* Gratitude Festival
* Ha'mara
o Festival of Lights
* Peldor Festival

Earth (contemporary)

* First Contact Day
* Federation Day

Earth (traditional)

* Christmas
* Halloween
* Thanksgiving

Qo'noS

* Day of Honor
* Kot'baval Festival

These probably should be used.....

My opinion? No, if they're connected to real world holidays or thinly-veiled attempts to connect to real world holidays. I don't like it when the other games do it, to be honest. Most seasonal holidays have some connection to a religious observance, and as an agnostic in the southern United States, I spend most of my year trying to get *away* from religious observances.

That said, I also realize that I'm in the minority and won't complain too much if they stick in there.

It'd be a good idea but folks need to realize that STO hasn't even out of the gate for a month yet.

All things in due time.
