Viral Matrix disables your ship for the duration. No movement, no ability use, can't even balance shield power.

The only way to tell what ships are using it is to watch for the little purple blob to shoot out. And note that when out of combat, any ship can swap Bridge Officers.

There's no icon for Viral Matrix that appears on your buff/debuff bar and it has minimal visual effect, which can make it hard to identify when teammates have been hit by it. Best I can say is arrange for your team to type something like "vm" into chat when they're hit by it so you can respond with Science Team as quickly as possible.

Viral matrix is a short term disable, that is easily defeated by an experienced group or team. Its basically a newbie/pug bashing tool. To defeat it its pretty simple, just have science team, group up with players, use voice chat programs, and talk to each other.

the problem is that Many players refuse to tool a ship for PVP combat, which includes weapons/boff powers, gear and what abilities to use. The tools are available to defeat VM rather easily, problem is that people do not use them,or are not aware of them, and then the complaints begin.

Given that the PVP is all instance based, or arena based, the simple fact is that organized teams are going to win every time when facing unorganized groups or random players. It does not matter which side they are on.

The solo player is going to have a much harder time, but frankly its still possible to be successful against skills like VM, you just have to be proactive and smart about using science team.

IMHO VM isn't very trek, I don't remember any episode or movie ever referencing such a thing.

You mean except the great ending of Voyager where Admiral Janeway VMd the BORG?

Not that this was a big thing...

And there was the Voyager where they put a Viral matrix into the borg network to free the borgs that were able to be indepent people in their regeneration cycles. Just a 2 episode-season.

Actually the best way to counter VM is with Attack Pattern Omega. You can use it while held and it cancels it and protects you for a short duration (depending on level and spec). If you have APO and Science Team both, VM isn't even a minor annoyance unless you have a whole team spamming it on you constantly. Of course, it's a LtCdr level minimum tactical power so unless you're in an Escort, BoP or Raptor you're only left with Science Team as a counter.

Ah, well, that would explain it, I never really got into Voyager.
