So now I've been playing maybe a month and I have two level 50's and four toons I'm playing with for a change of pace. I was going to get a zen ship for one of my level 50's -- D'd retrofit for my Rom engineer because I love the lines of that ship (currently flying a Ha'apax).

I started a Caitan Fed engineer just to fly the Atrox carrier but I'm not really leveling him because of all the talk about the insufficiency of the T5u path. I guess the Varanus giveaway will take care of the issue of the low level KDF sic toon I haven't played as much for just the same reason.

There's also a couple of Lobi ships I really like: the Tholian Recluse (iirc) for my Fed Eng and the Adapted Rom Battle Cruiser for my Rom engineer. I've got about 550 LC from opening those stinking boxes.

My plan has been to just wait and see what the second wave of the T6 ships brings or if there's a change of course. So what would you suggest a new player do in my shoes regarding buying ships.

Every penny you put into T5 is wasted on a dead-end ship line

Might as well put your money into a T4 sihp hoping that it will be put on par later

Umm, on a more optimistic reply, I'd suggest you keep using your level 40 freebie and just save your zen until more info regarding the T6 ships comes out. (level 40 ships are currently still useful though a bit more difficult, speaking from experience as i occasionally still use my mirror patrol escort)

A T5-U should be able to be useful in a level 60 environment but it won't be the best if you are the kind of person who likes to have the top-of-the-line ship to use...

(and now I'll just duck and wait for the enevitable flaming for not being angry at cryptic about T5-U)

Depends on your situation - for me, I do a few hours work, swap it for Zen, buy a ship I will use until... well, I don't know.

T6 doesn't actually obsolete T5 except for PvPers - right now, you could take a T1 ship and do everything except certain Elite PvE queues with it and not hamper your team, so a current T5 will probably be ok for level 60 PvE. I very much doubt that Cryptic will make average DPS required for Elite content go from ~3k today to best part of ten times that so that T5s are challenged - as their metrics show, the average player is so bad even 3k DPS seems massive to them.

PvP is an entirely different thing altogether, and that unbalanced mess (if IMO, best part of STO despite the unbalanced mess) involves so few people at any level that it is essentially ignorable.
I came for Star Trek. I remain for PvP, especially VPvP.

Your plan is sound. Continue to wait. There is nothing to be gained by buying anything at this time.

If you are open to using real money to buy Zen, then you can take advantage of the 15% Zen bonus which ends on Sept 2.

Other than that I would just grind dilithium to be exchange for Zen. Grinding dil is pretty easy at max level especially for the KDF.

I recommend you wait and see how the new ships will be like. And that doesn't mean that at that time you shouldn't buy a tier 5 ship if you want.
For instance, I don't see my Rom tact flying anything other than the D'Deridex. I have the Scimitar (I fly it on another toon) which is more powerful and would make any scenario much easier than with the D'Deridex but I won't let the D'D go.

I'll give you the same advice I give everyone; If you have your eye on something that really appeals to you, go ahead and get it. Get what you need, when you need/want. Nothing T5 is going to "obsolete" or "useless" once DR rolls out. True it will not be "top of the line" but, that really doesn't matter since it will be sufficient to play and complete all the content.

If you are a PvP'er or one of those that just has to have the top of line best shinies, you're probably better off waiting.

Also, a D'd retro can be upgraded to T5U and depending on how you read things, may end up being better than the first wave of T6's.

The info on t6 has slowly become a viable to the public, and despite the majority(myself included) thinking that t5u vs. T6 will be junk have been fairly wrong.

T6 ships will have an extra starship trait slot. T5u will get them as well but one less

Some T6 ships will have a seat for an intelligence boff that grants a boff ability. Based on the names of said abilities, it looks suspiciously like boosting power levels...but that hasn't been officially released so we don't have all the info yet

Fleet T5u ships will have an extra console slot, more hull, wider selection of boff seat selection(this point never seems to come up), and ships with 5 fore weapons; the t6 ships haven't been released but it's a safe bet that non will have 5 fore weapon slots. But the first batch of t6 ships may not have favorable boff settings)

I'd lean to that a f/LB/L T5u ship with the preferred boff seating will simply prove more effective then T6 ships.

Also consider that not all t6 ships will have the ability to slot a special boff...which means it's not part of the hard definition of t6.

In my final words of the matter....if you see a fleet version, lobi, or lockbox ship that has the perfect console/boff/weapon layout and you enjoy the design. Get it...it will serve you well through DR.

Cheers. And there is speculation in this post...i don't know for sure what the t6 ships will look like for weapons/boff seats/consoles(there may not be 5 tactical consoles at release), or what specifically intelligence officers will do...so my final point may change as more info is released

What little is known from them on some tech info on T5-U and T6 comparison. Wait and save and see how all this will play out in 44 days from today?
Time will only tell!
