I read about this exact issue (not STO related) several months back, but don't remember the details.

Can you give a complete dxdiag of your display device section (card, drivers, monitor)

Power Options, Advanced Settings, PCI Express, Link State Power Management - is this set to Off?

I looked up your HP model number and it shows an integrated Nvidia GeForce 9100 for your video card with 256MB shared memory.

See if you can monitor the temp on it with the evga tool and see if it's overheating on you.

Any chance you put an aftermarket video card into that system? If so, did you upgrade the power supply? The factory one appears to be 300 watt.

I had this problem with my 8800 GTX with a few games (Crysis, and hmm, forget the other now, but Crysis was the big one; and it did it regardless of resolution as well). Unforunately, it was just a sign of the video card failing, and I wasn't willing to contact tech support with BFG until it just started to fail in other games.

Really suggest trying to contact their cust-serv, that said, most likly all you'll get is an offer to replace the card if that's an option since their techs really aren't equipped to do that sort of remote troubleshooting.

To continue with my story of doom though, when this happened to me, with another game, the monitor went to 'standby', which looked the same as the how it behaves when the PC is off, but power still went to the monitor. Connection is there, so doesn't spit out the No Connection detected, it just doesn't want to work.

I know it's really not the answer you want to hear , but it's really all I can come with.

Well, that and maybe a hijackthis check to see if there's malware making your computer misbehave. Or a driver cleaning to make sure it's not an obscure driver conflict.

You did not list your video card.

You could try these these settings

Monitor Verttical = On
Half Resolution = ON
Antialiasing = None.
Dynamic Lighting = OFF
Light Quality = Low
Bloom Quality = Low
Screen-space ambient = Off
Reflection Quality= Low/off
Cinematic focus = Off
Limit Frame Rate 60/30.
