You are missing my point entirely (either intentionally, or unintentionally), so let me simplify it.

1) If you are mixing and matching and enjoying yourself (which I hope you are, otherwise...why do it?), then I say "great!" It IS a game after all, I hope we are all here to enjoy ourselves.

2) For some play styles it may even be MORE beneficial to do so (Leveling, solo and small group, PvP).

3) All that said, do not be surprised to find the fleets doing the highest end content will require you be a pure build in order to join them in doing said content, simply because that will be the most effective build for a given role.

NOTE: Point 3 assumes that cryptic makes the content non-trivial in nature, as high end raid content should be. So far, there has been nothing to indicate Cryptic is capable of doing so (though the CE encounter is borderline, if they only added an option for a closed instance to it for Fleets to go in with a preformed group).

Play, have fun...just understand that you ability to participate in some end game content will be dependant on your build (this is really no different than it depending on your level, unless you think a Lt 2 should be able to participate in end game content also). If you are fine with that, then there really is no problem here.

I'm a tactical officer in a science vessel, and I did have one person ask me once why I was "gimping" myself. I was a little confused, because I don't think my ship is gimped at all. Sure I might not be able to use the highest tac skills or whatever, but my ship is a debuffing monster, and I have a lot of fun playing this way.

Am I wrong?
I cross-class and enjoy it. Tactical/Cruiser and Engineer/Escort are my faves.

At the risk of sounding like a politician, it depends how you define "gimped". My tac officer trained one of my tac BOs in High Yield Torpedoes III, LTC skill. Unless I'm mistaken, the only way I'll ever be able to use that skill is to stay in an escort. No other ship will give me access to LTC tactical skills, will it? Yeah, you can mix and match and do fine, but AFAIK you'll never have the peak performance you could have if you stay within your specialty.

As to number 3, I'll repeat what I said after the Skill Cap was implemented, when everyone was QQing that this would happen: If you are being kept out of the upcoming raid content due to elitist players not liking your build, feel free to join me and the other members of the Cerberus Task Force, as we aren't like that. If we have room, we'll fit you in.

I would say that Engineer and Escort and Tact Cruiser are in some ways better then pure Tact escort and Engi Cruisers. When playing my Tact Escort, I use mostly + shield boosting abilities and some engi Bo ones. All I need is some high yield and rapid fire.
Tact Cruiser will add much needed punch and maneuvering.

In the end I still went the pure route.

If there was a challenge to STO then min / maxing might matter. But you don't even have to train your skills to win in this game.

In fact I purposefully didn't train my Lt C skills for 7 levels just to see if it mattered. It didn't. Everything died just as fast and I never did.

Who uses just one ship?

I switch between ships and "types" depending on how I feel at the time or how much challenge I want. I switch off BO's as appropriate.

Eh...?
So even though I put 9 points into the Captain skill to unlock High Yield 3, I won't be able to give that to my tactical BOFF because my captain's an engineer?

This will make me unhappy. Why list it as an unlockable skill in the skill tree if you can't actually unlock it?
