# 1 The 9km Grid Combat Limit
02-22-2010, 10:47 AM
Needs to be lifted so that we can fight at 20-25 Km.

Just IMO. The 9Km limit is a bit annoying.

My gripe with STO space combat is the need to be within 9km to fight, which would make large-scale ship combat im-freaking-possible and just a headache. Combat in eve online takes place at 20km-150km ranges, which is more manageable. This would benefit STO to embrace as it would allow larger fights to last a bit longer and rely on more tactics and game knowledge.

Just, you know, something for the developers to consider. 9KM just feels a bit like its 'in your face, right next to each other' type fighting.

Id like to see them add range as a factor in loot and eliminate the fixed range all together.

Range and color should be added as stats on loot items (ie blue phasers)

The fact EVERY SINGLE WEAPON IN THE ENTIRE GAME has the EXACT same range is crazy and makes NO sense at all!

you would think photons/torpedoes would have longer ranges than phasers.

I wouldnt mind if they made simple changes like:

Long Range Quantum Torpedo
-25% Damage
15km range
-10% accuracy

Cool thought from the OP but it's never going to happen. It would require a major overhaul to the combat system, and I am guessing they are focusing on other things. What may be less difficult is changing some of the weapon ranges.. that would be awesome.

this game have more aspect of a flightsim than eve. as i recall with eve you can press auto fire and sit back (ie capital ship combat). rather with this game (although you dont have the loop) do need you to perform a fly pass followed by a hammerhead turn sometime.

imagine if the range is increased to 20km. everything will be dead before you got close enough to perform any fancy dog flight. heck, with pve and a tac/escort bop dies in less than 4 seconds.

You could have weapons with a range of 50000km and it wouldn't make a difference in PvP when one side can just cloak to close that gap. You're asking for something that would be strictly PvE unless they allow Feds to fight FvF. Even then you would require two separate sets of equipment to compete in either arena. Now you have complaint threads about how in order to be competitive as a Federation player you need to do twice the work as the Klingons.

That's just my point of view, I could be wrong. I doubt it though.

The problem with realistic space combat is that it'll end up being a boring artillery battle taking place over several hundred kilometers. Any spaceship stands out in space like crazy because their heat is so much higher than the average temperature in space and thus is always easy to detect with sensors. The Normandy in Mass Effect circumvents this by collecting its heat under a separate hull layer between layers of armor, disadvantage being that the ship has to vent in an atmosphere every once in a while.
