Thanks SO MUCH for all your support, and we'll see you in-game!
I remember this mission... judicious and repeated use of the "Rally point" functions was necessary for me to get through it, but I did finish the mission with the "help" of my bridge officers.
But darn, I half expected a "tips" windows to show up describing how to use the rally functions, with the whole level being a tutorial for it.
The designers are aware of the bridge officer issues on this map and are working to improve pathing on this map. In the meantime, you may have better results approaching this map with a team until we can get this fixed.
Or you can just do it solo since the mission is ridiculously easy.

It can be done solo but I wouldn't say "ridiculously easy" and when I say solo I mean with help from Security Escort & Tactical Initiative.
Rally points didn't help at all as it didn't seem so much a pathing issue as a complete lack of interest from my away team who had found a nice place to stand and weren't moving under any circumstances no matter how loudly I shouted at the monitor.
Put a "me too" on this thread for me. I had to use individual waypoints and coax all BOff's through it to use them, which was annoying, because "I'm a Dr, not a Shepherd!"
/raises hand for highest amount of frustration so far in the game.
As was said by OP this quest single handedly has made me want to quit the game.
Ground AI is not bad . . .minor hang ups in klingon bases and the like but hey they have lots of spikey bits in their building design.
But the inability of the BOffs to navigate ANY of the catwalks in the Fire Caves is too much.
Even with judicial use of Rally points it is excedingly difficult.
Then you add in the fact that for some reason when a BOff goes down . . .there is a good chance that they end up down in the lava . . .to far and in combat for a resusitation.
Some one said that the quest can be completed solo (with Sec Escourt and such). And it may be. Then why allow us to take BOffs in the first place if it is impossible for them to function there?
I will be dropping this quest yet again. Hopefully something can be done about these problems.
While we're complaining, I had a pretty major issue when I tried to do this the other day.
After reaching the first hostage you release, the one that sets up the "Hostages Rescued (X/5)" mission objective & promptly beams out, one of my bridge officers walked into the lava and died. It was impossible to rez her, so I decided to beam out & back in. Upon doing so, I had my whole away team back and I was at the place where you rescue the first hostage, but he wasn't there. I got the dialog box indicating that he had beamed up to the ship, but my counter was at 0/5.
So, I progressed through the next cave, rescued the other four hostages, and reached an impassable wall of fire because the fifth hostage that had to be rescued was nowhere on the map. I checked. I filed both a GM petition (hoping to get that objective cleared) and a bug report on this issue.
Then, today, I decided to try again only to beam into the exact same situation I had before: standing where the first hostage was, reading the dialog box indicating the first hostage was rescued, with the counter at 0/5. I didn't attempt to go through the rest of the mission again because I didn't feel like sheperding my officers around, but that's kind of a major bug if you can't go forward and you can't go back without finding someone else to do the mission with you.

I had the same thing, but was able to resolve it by using Rally Points in a straight line (as in don't be on the far side of the cave and set a rally point).
Once you got through the first few bridges, the pathing was fine.
I had kind of a different problem... my team was actually too eager to follow me, so they took the short-cut... was rather funny though watching them one by one jump over the handrail right into the fire-pit.... had to solo the mission since everyone was dead in the pit...
