I'm on the fence. What's stopping someone from leveling an Akira or Stargazer to the T-5 level? They would just load skill points into Heavy Escort Captain and max out BOff-related Adm. skills. Essentially, the people who want to play the T5 ships are at a disadvantage, especially if they want to max out their admiral level captaincy skill.
There are skills for T5 ships as well. The higher the ship the better the hull but the lower ships turn better, so they can get good shields into place.
Being able to increase the tier of a ship by 1 only? (Tier 2 to Tier 3, etc) This would let people skip the appearance of a single tier of ship (Tier 3... for example) and go from the appearance of T2 to the appearance of T4
The skill required for a ship could increase when it's levelled up, so any Tier 5 ship (even one that looks like a T4) would require a T5 skill.
This seems like it could be implemented as purely a visual change (and money sink )
What about a half a tier up? Making something tier 4.5 for example. Not as good as a tier 5 but close. That combined with your captain abilities and admiral level weapons should make the difference negligable, without making the galaxy a flat out Sovvie clone.
I've brought up this very same topic myself. I would love, very very much to be able to upgrade (refit, as I called it) lower tier ships to higher tiers. I can understand limitations. A 150 year old Constitution isn't going to be the equal of a Sovereign.
On the other hand, an Akira's not that old, and not that small, if refit with the more advanced technology of the STO era, should be quite potent.
(It's a bit selfish of me perhaps to use that specific example, but the Akira is, and has for quite awhile been, my favourite ship in the Star Trek universe, and I'm going to be sad when I outgrow mine.)
I hope this topic continues to see quite a bit of discussion, and catches the attention of the dev team...
PvP I agree with, but allowing retrofits to a tier X.5 ship would make sense.
a: it could be unlocked at level 6/16/26/36/46 to smooth the transition from tier to tier. As is, the progression of player power seems very blocky.
b: While a T1.5 could never be a match for a T5, a T4.5 might be (See VOY:Endgame for what a retrofit of a T4 ship from 30 years in the future might look like*)
I don't think this change is a priority, but as is, the game has a problem that progression feels too slow because you don't get to play with new space ships very often, but also too fast, in that you reach cap too quickly.
*SPOILER ALERT: (time travel technobabble/plot device from ST:Voyager finale) Weapons/Defense schematics from the future allow Voyager to beat up Borg.
there have been lots of arguments concerning this topic:
the 2 most popular "con" being:
- PVP. You just dont see what opponent you have in front of you
- A "no matter what"-Upgraded Constitution NEVER (!) would be a match for a sovereign-class.
You CAN fly any starship you want. And given the option to put in ANY kind of equipment in there gives you a good ship even in higher tiers. The only thing is: No higher BOFFs.
It was discussed some weeks ago to perhaps allow upgrade only into the next tier.
another option would be to upgrade it only in BOFF-slots, leaving the rest the way it is.
I am against T5-constitution-class-cruisers. Just because it feels wrong.
Okay.. Star Trek is not a restrictive universe like you seem to think. You're of the opinion that a T1 or T2 ship should never be able to outclass your precious Sovereign. I'd have to argue that that is a matter of imagination... because it's not real you have plenty of room to create methods of evening the tier. For instance, who's to say you can't apply some sort of advanced structural engineering to make the hull denser to upgrade a smaller hull. Also, what a smaller ship lacks in the scheme of firepower and mass can be overcome with advanced systems... things such as advanced shields, targetting system diffusers that make it more difficult to hit, plenty of things we all can come up with to make a smaller ship more advanced to even the odds.. Just look at the Kling system... more advanced BoP... the ship you start with. Get over yourself. Star Trek is not restricted to your rules.
